I just bought a Penn SSV8500LL. So far we are getting along great, but I wish that it had a loud clicker on it like my Senator 9/0 so I could turn my back on it once in a while. Has anyone tried modifying this?

Thanks in advance!

Put a bell on the rod. They make plenty of noise and you do not have to modify the reel.

It is my understanding that Penn's intentions weren't for that to be a clicker. It is very quiet because when you are live baiting finicky fish, you want as little resistance as possible. If they feel pressure, they will drop the bait. If you were to make the clicker louder, it would result in more friction which would result in more resistance to the free spool.
The ll model stands for live liner. Typically on live baits, all you have in the water is line, hook, and bait. No weights.

The big open faced reels like a Penn Senator is designed to have a weight and set out in free spool and left unattended. When a bait is picked up, the little more friction from the louder clicker is negligible to the fish dragging the surf weight around.

Hope that helps

That might be true for the smaller live liner but a bait that can pull 20 -40 lb test line around while a hooks in his back won't mind a tiny bit more resistance.I'm curious to know if you can make the clicker louder too .I love leaving my big rods to the side and waiting for the clickers to go off.buying two 8500s next week sometime.I hooked up with a tarpon cpl weeks ago .and was not adquetely prepared.I need a reel I can site cast long cast .with heavy line.

You hooked up a tarpon in Port A? Had heard of any yet this season. I'll be back down there next week.

Ya and I'm planning on catching one when I go back the week after next.getting my new reels this weekend. I hope there's a way to get the clicker to click.
