I was visiting with my son-in-law over the weekend and the conversation got around to fly fishing, it usually does when I'm present. He walks out of the room and returns with a rod tube that looks pretty sad. He opens it up and pulls out a bamboo fly rod that looks like it hadn't seen sunlight in decades. The brand is "Strike King" the rod isn't in the best shape, but usable with some TLC. Some of the eyes are corroded and tip eye eaten away. Is this rod something to be used or put on the shelf?

OSHA tries to make the jobsite "idiot proof" then the employers go and hire the cheapest idiots they can find to prove OSHA wrong.

I say refurb it and use the [censored] out of it

I am a part time custom rod builder, Rods By Chris. I specialize in fly rods, but just down right enjoy building custom fishing rods. I see each as a piece of art.

If the rod is over 8', I don't have good news. However, you or you and your son might enjoy it and learn from it.

Things are even worse if the ferrules do not go together well, but not the end of the world if you are going to do a compete re-do.

Artie Hebert made a video out of re-doing bamboo. I have re-done a bunch and learned a lot. Tell me more about it.

Bill

I've rehabbed some of the old 8 feet plus bamboo rods to reduce the length and weight; made pretty good fishers but not for collectors-p-
