I'm real new to bass fishing, and am trying to get better at fishing spinnerbaits. I caught my PB (about 4 lbs, weak, I know) on one my first day trying one. So naturally, I won't be leaving home without them now!

I'm looking at this one here. It has a trailer hook on it. Are the increased hook-ups worth getting hung up more? Will I get hung up a LOT more? That's real frustrating for me, and one of the reasons I haven't bass fished much until recently - you gotta fish for them in all the spots you get hung up in.

What do you guys think? I haven't had any trouble with hook-ups on the spinners so far, but I've only used them a couple times.

I don't get hung up a lot with mine. I only use a trailer hook when I want to catch the fish tho...

I have used the academy spinners and they are good for the price. The trailer hook does not get as caught up in weeds and slop as much as you would think.

If you need a trailer hook they're not eating it grin

No, but the wire keeps it pretty clean. In the thicker stuff (imo) your getting more of a reaction bite and can do without it anyway. Also am not a fan of the academy spinnerbaits, they're pretty cheesy. Spend a few more bucks and you can get a much better quality bait.

I saw a instructional DVD featuring KVD fishing spinner baits and he said he almost always uses a trailer hook on his spinner baits. If it is good enough for KVD it is good enough for me.

I almost always use a trailer hook on my spinner baits, buzz baits and chatterbaits. I have upped my hook up percentage using trailer hooks.

No trailer Hook. I just don't like to hassle with them. Depends how bad the cover is that you are fishing.

Will I get more fish hooked way down deep in their gills? Or is it just for fish that miss the first hook, they might get caught on the second?

I don't want to hurt the fish by hooking them deep if I'm not really having hookup problems...

But it sounds like I should use them. I'm going to at least pick up a few and I'll try it both ways.

I'll drop some money on more expensive lures once I get a little better at fishing. I can't go a trip without losing a spinner bait or two, and I'm not really catching enough fish yet to merit dropping top dollar on gear. hammer

I won't throw a buzzbait or spinnerbait without a trailer hook. I've chunked em in the same thick grass and cover with no problems. Pads, grass, cat tails it don't matter. The key is to use a trailer hook that matches your spinnerbait. I see a lot of people putting a huge trailer hook on a small spinnerbait.

I always throw a trailer hook. I'm not going to take a chance on anything.

Me and my fishing partner argue this every time the spinnerbait bite is on. He wont throw one without a trailer hook and I wont throw one with a trailer hook. The odd thing is I catch just as many fish and I hardly ever have one hit the bait that doesnt get hooked. Knock on wood! To me, if they are eating a spinnerbait then they are eating a spinnerbait. If they are just slapping it, then a different bait will get a better reaction. Like a square bill or a swimbait. Just my .02

I always use a trailer hook on a spinnerbait or chatterbait if I'm fishing a tournament. If I'm just fun fishing and it really doesn't matter if I catch the fish, I may not.
