Looking to get my son a kayak, and we were looking at the pescador 12. My concern is my son is 6'3" and close to 300 lbs and the rating on the pescador is only 350. I understand the yaks are usually over on their payload so my questions are... Is the pescador too small for my son? Any big boys using the pescador 12 without problems as far as water in the cockpit area, and hows the handling?

I would say yeah unless he don't plan on rigging it. They are also very narrow 28" wide. I don't think he w9ls be comfortable.

I'm 6' and 220 and I started out with shorter kayaks and now I'm in a WS 135 which is 13' 5" and I feel that it's the perfect size for me. Even at 6' the foot pegs are extended all the way out so anyone bigger might feel a little cramped.
Anything shorter is just too small and cramped for me, and I now have two kayaks I don't use.
Don't believe those ratings as most kayak manufacturers over rate their capacity. It will be easy at his size to reach the limit once he loads himself and all the gear.

I would have him demo one first. There's a demo at white rock lake tomorrow, check for the thread here.

I don't know enough to recommend a boat, but I do know enough to recommend that he not buy one before he tries it!

i weigh 230 and had water come in thru the scuppers on pescador. looked liked a washing machine full of water by my feet. at 300 i wouldnt do it. i eneded up plugging the scuppers and it worked fine though. paddles great.

I don't always catch fish, but when I do, I prefer Dos Hybrids

I'm 6'3" 250 and have borrowed my buddies pescador several times. It does get a lil more water through the scuppers but I have never had a problem paddling and had it loaded with my gear and a livewell with a few gallons of water no problems. The kayak that I have and use is an Ascend FS10 sit in. It's also rated for 350lbs and Ive never had any problems with it either. But like others have said I would test drive a few first.

I'm 6'0-6'1 and 210. Its a wet ride anyway do I keep her plugged. I like my legs stretched so my pegs are already all the way down. Not sure how his height will fair in the pescador. Nice boat though

Don't do it! I'm 260 and its no fun sitting in water. Plus, you ride so low, handling is bad. Ride, Cuda, or big game prowler. I love the big game prowler. Paddles like a barge, but super stable.

I'm 6'3 220 and my Cuda is awesome even loaded down I stay dry with scuppers open if it's wavy different story but I love it I would say loaded down with everything I pack for camping and fishing with cooler batteries gear I'm over 300lbs and it still is easy to paddle and could put lots more weight in it if needed just my .02

There are 2 ways to handle weight; length or width. If you go short adjust wide. If you go narrow adjust length.

When I started yakkin I bought a 12 1/2 foot yak that is 32 inches wide to carry my near 300 pounds. Yak is rated 450 pounds and never had a problem in almost 7 years.

I've seen a lot of guys crowd the weight rating and it caused a problem every time.
