We camped out a Lake Bob Sandlin State Park this week and Camp County Game Warden Heath Taylor made time to take some of the boys in the Pegasus program fishing on Friday. Most of the kids were on their first camping trip and getting to fish on a boat for the first time. For several years now Heath has helped us try to teach these types of kids ways to have good clean fun and turn their lives around.

These kids' interaction with the law has seldom been positive. Most of them look at officers as someone to be avoided. Even the day before they were going fishing with Heath, the kids were wary about being around a law officer. Heath is a great ambassador for law enforcement, and he handles the kids in a way that shows officers are not only professionals, but they have a lot to share and should not be feared.

Heath spent all day Friday fishing with kids, rotating them in and out so they all could get to fish on his boat or mine. We ended up cleaning about 70 fish, with about 50 of them caught out of Heath's boat. We were fishing trees in deep water areas, most in the 40-foot range, near the dam on Bob Sandlin. The kids had a great time and were laughing and telling stories about their outing around the camp fire last night. I'm sure they got some memories they'll have to share for a lifetime, and hopefully that life will be a little bit better because of the efforts of people like Heath, and also by the donations of people like the good folks at Big Earl's Bait and Tackle out of Pittsburg, who donated half a pound of minnows, lots of sodas and candy for the kids to enjoy on their outing.

Way to go! We are blessed to have Heath in our area. I think we should put him in for "Officer of the Year" if they have such a thing.

Y'all are lucky. One year I called Austin to say how much we appreciate Heath's efforts. We know how those things go. You usually get 10 complaints to one kudo, but I wanted them to know they got a good one in Heath.
