how long can you hold your breath? 30 seconds? 10 seconds? Never longer than 1 minute.. otherwise dip the fish for 30 seconds making sure water flows over the gills, etc..

You have to think of the time it takes to unhook the fish as well. A lot of excitement goes on and then a minute feels like 10 seconds. I like the hold your breath thing. Maybe we all should start holding our breath when the fish comes out of the water so we know when to long is to long.

Fish mortality increases 10% for every 30 seconds after 1 minute. And if you see them swim away that doesn't mean they are fine. They'll show up dead later. Good advice to hang the fish over the side; especially if you are with someone. Let them get the camera, scale, etc. out and ready while you hold the fish in the water. Caution! If you have weak hands or its really cold use both hands. Took my dad out and he caught his biggest bass to date. It was freaking cold and when that fish touched the water it gave a mighty shake and I lost my grip. There are no words that can describe the look on his face. However, he managed to send plenty of words to all of our family and friends, warning them about catching a bigger fish than me in my boat.
