I've caught striper and LMB on fold fish out there. They work great.

MR™ trade secret: I catch large gizard shad in the lake before I launch on the river, early in the morning.

The idea of using live bait sounds fun

Keping live bait alive is challenging, but rewarding. I net bait on the river usually, but I rarely find shad. I am usually aend up netting and fishing with perch, killifish, or red tailed shiners.

I have had good luck with small plastics. 3" crappie lures to 5" trick worms. More importantly, I wore my arm out casting a topwater (chugger style) one morning, and I also failed when using a chrome rattle trap during the day. Those are two baits I would avoid.

There are plenty of hellgrimites in that river. They are easy to catch and easy to keep alive. Others swear them to be good bait, and I have soaked quite a few w/o a bite.
