I usually stand mine at 90 degrees and winde line tight until tip bends...Im wondering if my angle is wrong b/c Ive seen alot of variations. I have been missing some hook ups and trying to fine tune things. Is slack recommended?? I use 5oz weights and three ways with circles. Thanks guys...maybe Im paranoid.

I would suggest 40 - 50 gives you more of an angle to hookset IMHO...

I think the initial angle of line pull to reaction time of bite but I am no pro just an avid fisherman at heart..

Also let me add that I have found that if I have a tight line prior to hookset my % of catch goes up

About 45 degrees and keep your line fairly tight. Gives you more leverage setting the hook.

Circle hook or not?

When I fish circle hooks I go 90 degrees.

You said you're using circle hooks. In that case, rod angle doesn't matter since you don't strike with circles. Just steadily reel in the slack when you get a bite.
