So I was in a popular independent local tackle shop recently and the owner and I were shooting the breeze about bass fishing and he made a few comments about how to make fishing in Texas better.
His suggestions were encouraging more people to keep more bass (a lot more) and also to start stocking northern strain and get away from the florida strain. His reason was the northern strain are a lot less finicky. The one downside in my opinion is they do not grow as large.
I have been doing a little research and I honestly think he is has some valid points.
Anyone else ever consider this? Bingo I think you hit the nail on the head. Yea the slot is a great idea but it only works if we keep alot more of those unders. We should organize a monthly fish fry for the homeless. All the LMB's they can eat. I really think catch and release has gotten out of hand. And as for the northern strain bring those suckers on. I fish a few smaller lakes that haven't been stocked with Florida strain and the catch rate is great even post frontal conditions.

Florida bass are more likely to shut off in frontal passages.

Just stock Florida and northerns you can't stop them from breeding anyway. So hybrids will be the dominant species I agree about slot lakes though. Can you imagine if falcon had a slot I know this will never happen because we share the lake with another country but I can dream.

I've seen floridas go lockjaw. I've also caught them to nearly 15 lbs. Keep the floridas. Stock local ponds with northers, so kids can catch and learn easier.

the florida strain is managed to a certain level here in texas to try and create size and numbers. ive done many of shock trips on the vine w tpwd and if i remember correctly the florida strain was somewhere around 18-20%. the strain is not what we need to be thinking about. watch BASS THE MOVIE and youll realize why all the records come from southern cali. rainbow trout stockings...
