Yep, that is my brother, Neil Deibert who was fishing a tourney with me back in February 2003. Caught that beauty in Little Glasses on a 5 inch gizzard shad. When we finaly got it in the net we were screaming like 4th grade girls at an InSync concert. At the weigh in it was 17.41 pounds and was big fish of the tourney. We got second place by 1.1 ounce....

I used to believe this until the whole east Texas thing. They took in fin clips (genetic testing) of some fish that weren't really white bass but not sure what they were.

The verdict was that a few of the hybrids had actually reproduced. It is a total fluke. Unpredictable at best. But it does help explain some of those bizarre fish that seem to straddle a line. Or at least it could....

Fish washing down from another lake is a much likelier guess.

I would also guess that hybrids are probably one of the most mis-identified species in our great state.

I caught two 9 lb hybrids from Lake Texoma in the early '80's. They both had road rash where they
slid down a spillway somewhere.

As far as I know they have never been stocked there.

good luck

Striper and whites do cross breed.Especially in Texoma.I can believe it happens from time to time.Little fish get sucked into water releases ,big fish dont usually let a current take control. If they do get sucked in they dont skid down a spillway. Its usually shooting water out with fish in it away from the dam.Genius.

Stripers, like walleye, are ATTRACTED to flow and can "feel" it for several miles uplake. Fishing below Denison dam at night and hooking up with a striper off the bank a BIG fish normally heads right for the turbine gates if they are generating. You can ALWAYS tell it's a BIG fish when it heads UPstream into the white water. The smaller dinks just turn and go with the current. Seen it too many times to think it otherwise.

love these debates....not! we get a few here and there 08 was special because we got nocona and warika fish. i also believe imho it also caused the sandie boom we've had last few years. around ten days ago on a busy day jimmy got a 28inch beast of a hybrid on a pencil popper right next to me off the n end in 2ft of water running with simular sized stripers. also only the 2nd we've seen this year.

The current on the bottom is usually not near as strong as on the surface and in some cases the water is rolling under and going upstream on the bottom making it easy for the fish to swim upstream.

Wow! Thanks for all the response! I would love to catch a hybrid someday so I may have to try another lake. In the mean time the whites and stripes are just fine with me.

NEVER say NEVER!

I have caught a ton of whites, stripers, & hybrids. I am pretty good at telling them apart especially when they reach a certain length. I have definitely caught 1 hybrid in Texoma.

Virtually every large reservoir in the South probably has a few hybrids in it now. Hybrid striped bass have become a popular fish for stocking in farm ponds and small lakes. They escape from those with ease during high water and end up in the bigger reservoirs downstream. Texoma probably has hybrids both from striper/white bass reproduction and from upstream stocking.
