Hello, somewhat new to fishing. I fish off a pier alot and have found that while 20 lb test works fine for getting big drum close to the pier, they tend to break me off by the pillars, wrapping around the pillars, soooo I have decided to buy a 40-50lb SPINNING reel. I have my rod already. I am looking for an EXACT model that isnt that expensive and somewhat durable that someone helpful could recommend. I have been told daiwa and penn but no one can mention a specific reel.
Also, I have been told that you have to rinse off your reels when you go saltwater fishing. Does this mean even if you are on the pier dry (because of the salt in the air)? or do you only have to rise them off if you get them wet, ie surf fishing?
thanks for any help

Take a look at the largest size of saltstriker made by cabelas. Great great reels, even have a baitrunner drag system, are under $100 and are salt water ready.

Just about any 8000 series Penn you can afford will work with 40lb line.
Salt water does get on your reel even when on dry piers, you would be amazed how much water gets drug up with the line. Some lines are worse than others though. If you wear glasses or sunglasses, that is where those salt spots are coming from, the water flinging off of the spool.

First define "isn't that expensive". My first choice would be a Shimano Saragosa 18000 or possibly a Saragosa 10000. If that is too expensive, a Shimano Spheros in the same sizes. If you are talking about 50lb mono, no spinner will hold very much. An 18000 sized reel will only hold 250yd of 30lb mono. Have you considered using a longer, heavier shock leader? As for washing the reel, yes, I repeat, yes, rinse it every trip and don't wait a day or two to do it, unless you like buying new reels

+1 to the Saragossa. I fished the Carribean in May and caught a 360lb reef shark and about 100 King fish on 30lb line with one of those. The reel never slipped or faultered in any way. Only I did!!! For $299 they are a solid peice of gear.

You can NOT go wrong if you go with a Penn 850 or 950 Spinfisher (850ssm or 950ssm) . Penn makes other reels that are great as well such as a Penn 760 Slammer and many others with large line capacities. Your best price will be off of EBay and if you will watch closely you can buy it with free shipping for $110.00 or less. They will retail for $159.00 in most stores. They are tough and will take anything you will try to catch. They are plenty smooth with a great smmoooooth drag. Good Luck
