If you want a rig specially designed for LLM or back bay type waters on the coast. Listen to what Mr. Goff has to say. Read his past posts. He gives sound advice on here all the time. If you need a dual purpose boat, do your homework. No multi-species boat is perfect for any type of fishing but a compromise of all. You have to plan to compromise your fishing as well. I have a whopping 300hrs logged out of Pt. Mansfield. But I have fished from the land cut to the Arroyo. I read charts, run the ICW, idle in and out of areas I believe I can drift. Motor goes down to prevent me from getting too shallow. If I bump bottom, I back out. Alot of wasted time looking for fish in heavily angled water, but we catch our share. Some days more than others. You just have keep good judgement about what you are capable of.

ok guys, thanks. I think Ive made my decision. Im gonna build my own, and this is what it looks like finished

I know, some people have a big issue with home-made boats, but considering history, I really dont.

Heres a link to a video of this boat running with a huge load and a 25 horse motor.

You might really think knee deep is shallow, it's far from it. Nothing at ALL against home built boats, I run one, but if the LLM is your happy hunting ground, you need to get that prop up in a tunnel so you can at least run in 6" or less.

This is from experience..not theory.

If you're going to build that then why not just buy a Stoner Skiff? Same thing and it's already complete.

Yeah, me too...what a noob can't understand is there is nothing that can "run shallow flats, and get to the end of the jetties, and light offshore work"

Everything on a boat is a compromise, and nothing does it all. What makes a hull work in deep rough water makes it useless in shallow flats.

And no bay in Texas is as shallow as the LLM, it goes miles and never gets over a foot deep. You watch over and over pilgrims come down in their v or even tunnel v's and just suffer trying to get around. It's painful to watch. The problem is, unless you've suffered the pain, you simply can't believe it's that big a deal. It is. You want to run a hull in an area? Look what the locals run. Shallow sports, Majek redfish, something that will run and get up really shallow. They don't care what it rides like, if you can run shallow you won't need to hardly ever deal with rough water.

I am a noob. No doubt. My only experiences with boats is my old tin-can with a electric trolling motor on it and the USS Tarawa. I have about as little experience as a person can have and still know what it is they think they want a boat to do.

Update, I told my wife about building this boat, what its gonna cost and what goes into building it. She took all of us shopping at BPS for some camping gear for a trip to Matagorda coming up, and while we were there we saw the MAKO 17 CC skiff. After seeing the price, it looks like that will be our new boat. The cost of building one vs. just buying the Mako, with a warranty, even she was in for the idea.

Now, I just need to learn how to effectively, safely, use it. I sure as h3ll dont want to be one of the a$$h0l3$ you guys gripe about all the time....so I better learn from someone who knows their stuff !!

Start out with taking a boating safety course. I feel everyone should take it at least once.

AND that is just the beginning, for the many years that I had a boat I learned something every time I was in it, even when it was on the trailer. (most of the times on the trailer was how to fall out of it).

I don't know how it is in Texas, since I have been shore bound since moving, but in Florida, the fish and game guys gave a lot of respect to that annual Coast Guard inspection sticker. One once mentioned that the sticker meant you were serious about boating.

All anyone really wants is respect from others. Respect their time (don't make them wait on you un-needily), respect their space (don't crowd), respect their safety and peace of mind (mind your wake, route, maintain control of your vessel)...Good luck with it.

Just do yourself a huge favor, and get the rated motor. The few dollars you perceive to save now will be aggravation six months from now.

AND...don't let tracker put a POS prop on it, they'll try to stuff a junk aluminum or merc vengance on it. Make them swap out a powertech four blade, it's night and day difference in performance. (I used to work for them, know what they do)

Why not just go OFFSHORE?

This boat will go anywhere in any weather and it has a chart inside to show you where the other boats are lol I cant believe there isn't someone fishing somewhere in this boat right now.

Marx, that alum. boat will not go anywhere and do everything. Low side and not a very deep V on the hull. I wouldn't run it in anything over 3' seas.

That pilot house will keep you dry but hotter than hades too. Not enough deck space for fighting big fish. It's probably fine for what it's intended but it ain't intended for fishing. There's a reason nobody is running a boat like that.
