I have narrowed it down to two options. 1. 2012 Triton 17 Explorer, merc. 115...... OR..... 2. 2012 Nitro z6, merc. 115..... I fish weekends and probably 10-20 local working man weekend tournaments a year.
Any suggestions or opinions are very much appreciated. thanks

Search the Internet for a new 2010 triton tr18 SE. Definitely the best value, out the door with a 150 opti for 22k. It is the same as the '12 18 explorer but they are now running around $27k

Out of those two I'd definately go Triton, Ranger is also making a boat called Z117 rated for 115 HP that should be comparably priced. Make sure when you look at the Nitro that you compare standard equpment to the other boats. I was tournament rigging them on their "build a boat" section and by the time I got any of their boats rigged out with equivilent equipment to the other brands of boats and what I consider to be tournament ready I was priced very near the other boats....... That being said, Doug R. is right on the money here, you may want to consider buying an older used 20 footer for the same money just for safety reasons......for about the same money you can find a garage kept jewel that would be just as nice as a new rig if not nicer because more than likely it will have all the latest and greatest "toys" on it already......

I definately agree with the above. The bigger you can go the better. Especially when they are already rigged out with the nice electronics. When you buy new and upgrade evrything you will never get your money back out of it. So it tends to be a money pit.

Never buy a new 17' boat... It is hard to resale them.
Boatless for minute

Bigger is better and SAFER, 19'6 or better, too many big open water lakes in Texas, Ray Hubbard, Fork, Texoma and Ray Roberts to name a few.

Check out north Texas marine. When I was looking for one they had a new 2011 triton TR186 for like 24k. There was a 2012 for just a couple K higher

Between those two I would go with a Triton, but after running a 17' for several years with 115 then going up to a 18'9 with 150 was huge difference. Like the other guys have said, bigger boat is much safer, more storage and dryer boat so with that kind of money I would look for 2007 or newer boat with 150 in the 18-20' size.
Slide right, coming in .... Fish On!

If you're looking in the 17.5ft range look at the Bass Cat Margay. It's got a huge front deck. They have them in Decatur at Bowie Marine. It's definitely the better boat for about the same $$$. You should atleast take a look at all of them before you buy.
