I don't think flat head have the presence of mind to know wether or not the spines have been clipped off or not. They eat bullheads naturally so clipping the spines is not neccessary. 10-4

Does anyone keep an aquarium with bait in it...for future use. I was talking to D.C.M. and he told me he knew a couple people did but I was wondering just how many. And where could you buy some live minnows, black saltys, maybe even bullhead, but I can get those outta the ponds at work, minnows too I suppose. I built me an 8 ft by 2.5 ft by 3 ft deep tank in my back yard. It's well shaded and has a water pump with a DIY filter (natural fiber A/C filter from WM) and an aerator. Water is much cooler than I would have expected. Can't be over 80 degrees. I have the bottom a foot below ground level. Lined it with the thickest plastic sheeting from Home Depot. Got bullhead, sunfish, 2 two pound carp, and even a 6 inch drum in there. Tried putting a shad in, but it didn't live long. It was already stressed from having it in a cooler for a few hours so I am not surprised. May try again with a fresh shad. Gonna catch some minnows sometime and store them for crappie fishing.

Hook them only through the skin just in front of one of the gills. Most of the time flatties attack the bait from the head. Excellent bait and stays alive a long time. That's an interesting tidbit. Now to find some bullheads.

But, its worthless in summer unless u keep it outside. Theyll die quick heat, but they can keep for months if fed properly, and kept cool.

I just dump it out, and I put some clean declorinated hose water in it. Also, u cant over arerate. I use a cheap 4 line pump from walmart, it keeps plenty of o2 in the tank.
