Hello,
I've got a '93 johnson 90 hp v4 with vro2. I need to replace the fuel/vro pump. Many people have told me how dependable and how sorry the vro system was. I have had good luck with mine, but I still worry if the alarm fails or something. In looking into a running issue I have with the boat, signs point to a weak fuel pump. I priced a new vro and have decided to look towards a pre-mix standard fuel pump to replace the vro2. Does anyone know the part number or where to order the one that would fit my motor? Any major issues with switching over? (other than mixing oil and reduced fuel storage life) My motor is a '93 90hp V4 model code VJ90MLETS. Even though it's coded for manual tilt Stratos must have put power trim on it. Thanks,
Justin

I switched to electric on mine (see pic) easy install and more dependable imo. the red wires going to the front are a cutoff switch for safety and workin on the engine

mr gasket import 4-6 cyl (red) pump and its only about 35.00

Another alternative: VRO repair kit on e-bay.

I tell people if you like the convience of the oil injection on those motors just budget yourself enough to replace the VRO pump every few years to keep the piece of mind that its OK.

Thanks for the advice! Gary Purdy- I believe you have anwered every motor question I have asked on here. Thank you very much!
I will probably look at the re-build kit and see what that entails. If not I will get an electric inline like hopalong123 showed in his picture. Now when doing that on this V4, is there a need for a pressure regulator or a return line of some type? My floats and needles should be ok, but running thru the no wake will definitely not use the fuel supplied by the pump. It looked like the pump was just put inline and secured to cowling. Surely the alternative to the $438.00 VRO or the $421.00 non-vro can't be this simple. I love good ol American ingenuity. Again, I'll look at the re-build for cosmetic and resale reasons, but if it's an expensive venture I'll give this a shot. Save up on the side for the VRO or just run it til I decide to upgrade. Please let me know if you had to regulate or do anything special. If that pump has a brand or model shoot it back as well. Thanks!
Justin

It is a low pressure pump, no regulator required, wired into a fused + wire that gets hot when you turn the key on.

Thanks. I did some looking, found some low pressure fuel pumps. I guess they are like the ones I used to put on my 77 ford that vapor locked. I'll wire it into an ignition wire. I'm still looking at rebuilding the old VRO, I plan on upgrading boats in the next couple years. Always like to send stuff out as close to OEM as possible. Thanks again! Between the trim issues and this fuel issue that just started, my upgrade might occur quicker than my wife would like.

the one on my engine is from auto zone, 4-6 cyl imported. this is a low pressure and should work without a regulator, only about 3-5 psi.
its wired into the key switch on the other side of the pic at the connection block, also has a safety cutoff switch under the cowl so I can shut it off if need be (for working on the power system and engine with key on).
it also has a filter in the brass housing prefilter this is in addition to the inline I have at the tank.

Thanks! That means its the 42s pump instead of the 12s. The 42s has lower psi. I have a 12s (purolator) I had as a spare for an old truck I had. I'm going in for parts later I'll pick one up and wire it in. Thanks for your help!
