I am looking to add some lighting to escape the summer heat that is coming. I have seen a couple of posts that show boats with lighing installed by/in the rub rail.
I believe one of the guides that frequents the site has LEDs installed on his boat. It seems that when installed above the water, power is everything because of the reflection. Thoughts?

i would like to have the lights as tarponfly has,but until then,i use a submersible light 2'-3' down,attracts baitfish like crazy....that was last summer on aquilla

One on the front and one off the back has done well over the years...Little more work,but will get it done.

This would be my choice and it will be in the future!

What kind of structure works best for night fishing? Do you jig, or use minnows? I'd love to do some fishing at night but haven't got a clue.

I have a strip of 4' green leds on the front of my kayak. I got them here: http://www.oznium.com/flexible-led-strips They are the waterproof strips and come in many lengths. I like them fine and I use them mainly just to light up the snakes, but in water less than 10' they work well for attracting bait fish. Lights that can be dropped in the water are great for deeper water and I have several that I use. I just don't like them hanging from the kayak because they can get in the way, but they're no that much of a problem in a bigger boat. I have one that I made from three lights I tied together in a string. They are the smaller ones that they use in the ocean and tie to their fishing lines. Each light holds a AA battery so there's no power cable to fuss with. I can tie it to a tree or stump or jug it and anchor it (whatever works), and then back off and throw back to the lighted area.

I would fish in the same places you fish in the daytime. I usually fish up and down points or back and forth under a big bridge until I find them.

Phillcat, I use a 1/8 or 1/4 Oz jig on the bottom so it's weight and bait, plus usually the bigger crappie come on the jig. Then I tie on a hook about 18" above the jig for a minnow. If need be you can also tip the jig with a minnow.

I put the eBay lights on the side of my boat. So far they have not put any more fish in the boat. I couldn't spend $400 on the wildcat lights. I catfish a lot at night as well and when the lights are on and the rods are in the rodholders I don't need any other light. I do like that about it. I'm not sure that any light on the surface is going to do well when your fishing in 12'+ of water. Unless the water is clear. Here is what mine look like.

Those things look really cool, and I suspect are more designed to catch fishermen than fish like KrappieKat, I don't think having them above water would be nearly as effective as having a bright submersible light, especially in deeper water.

mine are mounted on the transom and are extremely bright but they are below the water line and it does make a big difference.

Well Saturday night I had the top or one end about a foot under the water, but I could have put it a lot deeper if I had wanted to. Matter of fact that is something I want to try, putting it down say 10' maybe and see if that makes any difference. I used the 714 Reel-Lites and am thinking about another, but not sure I really need 2 since it put light all the way around my boat and it's a 17' Lund.
