I think they are called red horse (idk if thats their real name or a common name that people use around here) if so they make one he77 of a crappie bait!

Red horse minnow or red horse shiner. Native small carp. Max size 3-4 inches. We use them in the Guadalupe for bait.

I thought it was just a regular minnow but the males get colorful before they mate?

Red shiner. Commonly called a redhorse, but that's a whole other group of fish that are suckers. That's a male in full breeding color. Member of the carp and minnow family.



No fish is too good for the grease.

Red Shiner, (Cyprinella lutrensis). Breeding Male. This is the most common native fish species in Texas.
