I pull doubles also. I am way over length, but have never been hassled. 20' boat, 25' 5th wheel, and long bed crew cab Chevy.

I was really impressed with how tight it turned, and after a lot of practice, I can back it up

Also, one more little rule to add, you cant pull doubles behind a bumper pull trailer, the 1st trailer has to be a gooseneck of 5th wheel.

I was with a guy that got caught and was well over the max length. The DPS pulled him into a roadside park and made him drop the boat right there.

I could explain it but it would make no sense, once you get used to it it's not hard. Basically it starts exactly the opposite of how you would have up a single to start the back of the last one going where you want it, then get directly in front of the second one to maintain the angle.

I used to do it with aircraft on a flightline using a tractor and tow bar so you have 2 pivot points like double trailers. After a few months of doing it, I could stack aircraft in a hanger so tight during inclement weather, no one else could even get them out lol.

How far over was he?
Last time I measured mine, I was like 72 feet from the tip if my grill guard to the
Tip of my prop, but that was back when I had my SWB truck. I have not measured it since I bought my LWB truck, but I bet I'm about 75' now.

If I remember, it measured about 77'. He actually didn't get a ticket, just a warning, but we had to go dump the travel trailer and then go back and get the boat.

The big rigs pull doubles all day...Central, Fed Ex, UPS, SAIA Their first trailer is the fifth wheel and the second is either some dolly connected by a pintle hook or ball.

Max overall length is 65 feet in most states so that is why I went with the smaller 5ver.

Backing up is just like backing pushing an acft with a tow bar, the only problem is I need wing walker to see what's happening on the other side of that coach.

Sure wish that was legal here in CA. but you can't hardly fart here without getting a permit.

Max length is 65' here in TX. I used to pull 16.5' bass boat behind a 32.5' fifth wheel. Actually handled pretty well and the boat trailer tracked fairly close to the fith wheel during turns. This is typical due to the amount of outward tailswing of the fifth wheel. Like others have said, backing 'em up can be done. It helps if you can learn to think of the truck & fifth wheel together as the "big truck" and consider your actual truck as the "front axle/front wheels" of the "big truck." When you get that idea in your head, then you're essentially backing up a very short trailer (boat) with a very long truck (truck+5th wheel.)

Sure was a lot easier than taking two tow vehicles.
