I try to adhere to the 100 degree rule (water temp + air temp over 100) and stay within 2 or 3 hundred yards from shore. I wear all synthetic or wool with multiple layers and I don't push my luck with wind / waves.
Curious about those that will go out and kayak / fish in colder water, and those that won't go out at all in the winter. Anyone wear neoprene clothing or other speciality clothing.

I have gone out in cold weather. I do not suggest wearing waders due to the fact if you do happen to turtle they will fill with water and that would not be good. I dress for the weather and then put a pair of waterproof rain pants on and Lightweight rubber boots. This keeps me dry. THE LIFEJACKET provides a warmth layer also. I see too many people out there in kayaks without life jackets. I guess you fish lewisville due to your location and going out on that lake without a lifejacket, in any boat, due to the high number of brain dead idiots that use the lake is crazy. Hope this helps, sorry about the rant.

I don't personally think it gets cold enough here to stay off the water, if you are prepared. The key is not to dress for air temps, you must dress for water temps to be prepared in case you go in. Seth is right for sure about the PFD, but I would disagree about the waders. I think you would be surprised how well they keep water out if you are wearing a wading belt. The whole thing about waders filling with water and pulling you down is nothing but a wives tale. I'm not sure what makes people think that water inside their waders would be any heavier than the water outside of their waders. It might make it a little tough getting back in the 'yak, but that's all.
Anyway, yes I kayak when it's cold. A lot of times you can get the whole lake to yourself.

thanks for advice
I suspected what you are saying is true Steve regarding waders. With a wading belt on and a PFD doesn't seem like the water would get in too bad. It seems like in a worst case scenario you wouldn't have a boat so having a waterproof layer between you and the lake could be a life saver.

I'm torn between getting a wetsuit or waders. I'm sure that either of them would work but at least with a wetsuit, you could get out of the water easier if you happened to go in.
