I was approached by a guy at academy sports today, that said he was a guide. He asked me if I wanted to book a trout trip. I asked how much and he said 150.00 for a half day, and 250 for a full day.I got his name and number and looked his stuff up on the internet, he was licensed guide.
I called him to ask some questions, and he answered all of them correctly.
Seems that they (viet-namese} are getting into new ventures.
My family owns a large seafood company, and we went through the trying times of the 80s..with foreign shrimp peddlers.
Not sure if this new guide service is good are bad. whats your thoughts.

I don't care about race. If they can do the job right, and do the job cheaply I say more power to them. Especially if they are a licensed guide. I'd much rather go with a gentleman that I paid 150 who put me on fish then 450 to a white guy who put me on fish. Yeah it may put some trying times on guides, but this is America. I could understand having complaints on him if he wasn't a licensed guide, but from what you have said just seems like a guy trying to make some money. If he can put customers on fish at that price it may provide some actual competition in the market.

At those rates he will not be around long. There is no way he is making money charging that rate. I don't care about race either. And I'm sure he is a good fisherman. But if he runs a boat be won't stay in the business for long. There is no profit at $150 a day. Plus summer time people don't want full day trips. They want to get there fish early and be off the water by 11 or 12 before the nasty summer heat sets in. Gas at around 4 bucks a gallon, Shrimp at nearly 20 bucks a quart, tackle, boat up keep...... Can't do it!!

What drove the US shrimpers out was the US gov. subsidizing the compitition .
If they do the same thing here US guides are history .

Just like happened to convience stores . Our politicians sell us out .

A lot of guides got started charging really low rates until they built a name for themselves... he might still be in the seafood biz and doesn't need the money... maybe.. i don't know.. Some of those guys that work the bay prolly know structure that a lot of others don't, but then again maybe not. I kinda respect a guy that's willing to basically go knock on doors to start something up... whether its right or wrong.. that's still respectable. He is not making any money for sure at least not right now. Wish him all the best. He can make it if he treats people right, is honest, gives over the top customer service, stays on the water until puts his party on fish... that's all up to him.

Could just be a way for him to cover expenses and go fishing at the same time. Win/win solution for the guide (who likes to go fishing) and the customer to fish (at less cost.)

Like most people say, clarify what's expected to the guide there won't be any "misunderstanding."

There should be a minimum and maximum fee in all Services - going that cheap will only hurt the business over all-Reminds me of these guys going door to door with a lawnmower hanging out their small car trunks offering to cut ur yard for 15$ or so-
