I'm right there with you on this. It can be a fine line between spending too much and not saving enough for the future. When I get too old to get out and enjoy the things I have always done, I want to be able to sit in my rocker on the front porch with a big smile on my face thinking about all the good times I had in life, not sitting there with a pocket full of money wishing I had enjoyed life more. Course you do have to save enough along the way to make sure you have a front porch.

Same for me. I am a now and later guy. Not saving it all for retirement when maybe I won't be healthy enough to do the things I want.

I'd rather be the guy sitting there drooling wishing I had bought a new boat than the guy sitting there drooling wishing my kids hadn't dropped out of school because I thought a new boat was more important than their college education. I guess everyone's got their priorities.

I'm having to resist right now and it's tough. I have my boat paid for but I want to upgrade. I can't glide through the rough water in a 17'4" boat with a 112 hp. engine. I'm trying to wait until I can pay cash before making an upgrade.

Patriot07, Some people don't have or even know what priorities are. Some of them are the ones that lose their house or move back in with mommy and daddy when they lose their job.Its all about them. "I see.I want.I deserve it." Sounds like you have some good priorities.

My philosophy is if I prioritize my spending in this order 1) tithe 2) save (retirement, kids education and savings) 3) bills then 4) extras and fun...this will hopefully take care of my family and myself for a long time. I don't have everything I want but so far have had everything I have ever needed.

Having said all of that I LOVE looking at new boats and new vehicles and have to resist the urge from time to time.

I think everyone should buy a new boat...... But that's just me; and my salesmen; and my mechanics; and my kids; etc.

You have a boat now so you are ahead of the guy fishing from the bank wishing that he had a boat. Enjoy what you have and save your money until the time comes that you can pay cash for your new/newer boat, it will make it that much better.

cheers

Would sure help the boat buying decision process if I could find a web site or calculator that will tell me exactly when that will happen.

I know what you are going through. I was about to pull the trigger on a Ranger Z521. Then my daughter's boy friend comes over to ask for my daughters hand in marriage. So, now I have a wedding to pay for. I can say I am excited for my daughter and the boat fever will have to wait another year or so.

Pretty big assumption. I don't see anything said where anyone's kids went lacking.

I'm having a hard time with it now too, I had posted my boat forsale on another forum last year and took it off the market( changed mind about selling ) and recently have been thinking about it again, then all of a sudden I start getting pm's and emails about buying my boat and realized someone bumped the forsale thread from last year asking if it was still for sale, so now I have 10 people trying to buy my boat and it's not even for sale!!!!

And I might or might not have just seen a new boat I want :look:

Tempting!!!!

I have a boat. It's paid for. It's not much, a 94 tracker pro team 17. I want a new boat, but can't get a new boat. I have 2 high school students. They think they should get cars and go to college. So, I'm stuck with what I have. Envy truly is a green eyed monster. It will best us--given time and attention. How do you deny your urges? Reality is certainly a strong dosage, but the monster still lurks.

I agree with prioritization. But, we only live once, that is a fact. I have friends that their parents spent their life savings on their college education, only for them to blow it off and become a scum bag.
I on the other hand spent 8 yrs in the military, graduated with an Associates in Information Technology and a Bachelors in Management. All paid for "by me" and the great job that I am blessed with. I think this makes you appreciate it all a little more than mommy and daddy saying, "here you go, it's free". I also paid for my own marriage etc, makes me appreciate everything more.
Moral of the story, buy the best boat you can afford if you like to fish. (That may be a flat bottom aluminum or a 21 fiberglass) I have seen way to many men wait, wait, wait and wait until they end up with a heart attack, diabetes, no energy etc etc.
I told my family, that I go to work everyday for my family #1 and my boat #2. Take one of those out and its hard to wake up each day and hit the grind.
Buy the boat! You will thank me when you are in your 70's and 80's.

Hang in there. I don't have to fight the desire much. It just can't happen yet, period. But I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. My son has 3 more semesters at T A&M and then he's off the pay roll and I can start putting that back.
