I have never used brain on a spinning reel before, do I need to use a backing on the sppol before I spool it with braid?

If you are going to be casting to spawning crappie probably the best idea it to use electrical tape directly on the spool and then add as much braid as you need to exceed your maximum cast be 30' or so.

New braid is the devil. Once you've thrown it 50 or 60 times it will cast like silk but when it is new/stiff it isn't happy.

I don't beleive that you have to use backing. I think the reason the most folks due is that braid is expensive and using backing means you don't ahve to spool as much of the expensive line on to get the spool full enought to cast correctly. You can fill the spool full of braid if you want to.

Yes, braid works well on spinning or casters. It is an excellent fishing line but be aware with longer rods for crappie fishing 8' or more, braid has a tendency to easily wrap around the tip, especially in a breeze of any sort. This is extremely frustrating the longer the rod.

I have some hybrid/striper spinning reels that i have braid on. I use the electrical tape method. Braid will bite into itself if the line isn't tight on the spool. What i do sometimes is tie on a big popping cork and flip it off the back of the boat while the boat is moving then reel against the pressure.

Braid might not be the best option for casting light lures with low water resistance. The line has to be tight on the spool if you don't wanna have issues.

I use cheap onmi line for my backing & wind the braid on as tight as possible. It will wrap around the end of your rod in the wind, but IMO, the sensitivity & strength outweight that issue. I also believe that PowerPro holds a better knot than Spiderwire & does not fray as easily.

I agree braid is best with some backing and also use swivel snaps and mono leaders. For example I use 20lb braid which has the diameter of 6lb mono. I use some good 6lb mono as a leader and if I get snagged up the line pops easily. Also by using swivel snaps I can clip on pre made snell hooks for live bait. I also have a rig setup with 6lb Fireline cause is was on sale. It's diameter is 2lb mono I find it awesome for shooting docks.

You can also add two small rubber bands to the spool before adding the braided line to your spool. This will also help keep the braid from slipping.

I use electrical tape and Berkley Fireline Fused. I don't tend to have it wrap around the end of the rod that much. Maybe 2 times I can remember. I love braid.

I have superglued the braid to the spool. Or just leave a
short section of mono and splice with a double uni.
