I am taking my kids and a friend of theirs to Whitney for Easter weekend. It has been years since I have been down there and was curious what is going on this time of year and where would be a good place to start. We are staying at State park and will have a boat to explore. I dont want the kids to get bored and wouldnt mind catching a few myself.

Any hints will be appreciated.

I would think the sandbass should on top down near the island by then!!

If the wind is blowing out of the south or se or sw check the main shoreline along the state park as you come out of the ramp cove (Frazier Creek?) - hook a left and fish the wind blown shoreline all the way up to and including the shallows at the mouth of Whitney and Towash Creeks. Then go to the island (between state park and the dam) and fish along the main river channel parallel to the island on the state park side. Also drift/troll the McCown Valley flats.

I would have had to just resort to the usual windblown points and such and fake it as I have never fished out of a boat on Whitney. I used to go to fish the river below the dam about 20 years ago but I didnt have a boat then and pretty much stuck to the river.

The only times I have been on the lake we were playing around on the cliffs scuba diving. It was pretty clear for Whitney however still a limited visibility dive. Great for teaching search and rescue .

I can't wait I just hope the wind lays down and the warm continues.

Water stained; 58�62 degrees; 0.87' high. Lake Whitney is currently experiencing a lake�wide fish kill event, caused by golden algae. The fish kill is reportedly affecting every species of fish; however the vast majority are non�game species. Anglers considering fishing Lake Whitney should be aware of this fish kill, and plan their trip accordingly. Additional information will be released as needed. Black bass are slow. Striped bass are slow. White bass are fair on minnows. Crappie are fair on minnows. Catfish are slow.

March 2, 2012 � Brazos River Basin

TPWD game wardens are investigating a probable golden alga-related fish kill at Horseshoe Bend. Sand bass, sunfish and freshwater drum have been found dead, along with stressed carp and gar. There are no dead fish at Tintop Road at the present time.

Lake Whitney: A toxic golden alga bloom is causing a fish kill. So far, threadfin shad, gizzard shad, freshwater drum, sunfish, bass, striped bass, and other nongame fish are affected. The vast majority of fish are nongame. An investigation was conducted on Wednesday and Thursday and estimated fish kill numbers are pending. The kill is most active around the McCowan Valley/Juniper Cove area but the bloom appears to be moving down-lake, as many dead threadfin shad were noted floating in open water between McCowan Valley and the dam. Water samples contained moderate golden alga concentrations at Soldier�s Bluff and Steele Creek and high concentrations at McCowan Valley.
