As a kid I'd catch them in a creek that ran through our farm and give them to an uncle who would put them in a 55 gallon drum, then throw all his garbage in there for a few weeks until they got so fat they couldn't pull their legs in. Then he'd butcher them for soups and stews.
Nasty boogers to handle as a kid. Held them up by the tail and always wondered if my arm was long enough to keep that nasty head away from my legs.

hate to break it to you an aligator snapping turtle is not that common in texas anymore they are endangered in texas, and the pic posted above is a common snapping turtle not an aligator snapping turtle if you want to see some snapping turtles and several native or foreign turtles that people keep as pets breed and sell the babies, i suggest you go to turtleforum.com look in the murkylair section it has pics of all the snapping turtles that are bottom dwellers, i actually own one that is pink and it is a natural phenonomanon that occurs in the wild, i actually keep and breed turtles and sell the offspring for extra cash, there are several really cool looking turtles in texas waters and some i wouldnt want to mess with

Granny back in N.C. used to cook up a delicious turtle hash out of them suckers. Nowadays, you don't see many around.

I thought they were rare. I have never seen one in there natural habitat. Seen them more in aquariums. LOL Turtle Man grabs them out from the muddy water holes. Call of the wild man!!
