My 1993 johnson 150 fast strike has a problem. The batterie is fully charged and it has power to the starter. All I get when I turn the key is 1 click coming from the starter.
I checked all the connections and cleaned the terminals off with a wire brush and all that.
Could it be my starter or my soiloid?
Any other places to look?
I check that red plug and a fuse that was right by it and they were good.

If someone wants to help me with it in exchange for a fishing trip or something it would be greatly appreaciated. I am a rookie at boats and need all the help I can get.

If you have or can get a voltmeter, check the voltage from starter terminal to battery ground while someone turns the key to "start." If you get 12v, your starter motor is bad.

If you get less than 9v, measure the voltage at the solenoid input terminal (from battery) with the starter engaged. If you get 12v, replace the solenoid.

If you get less than 9v at the solenoid, measure the voltage across the battery. If you get less than 12.6 volts (all electrics turned off), recharge the battery.

If you get at least 12.6v, check the battery again with the starter engaged - if less than 9v, recharge the battery.

Remove and clean connections on battery-to-solenoid cable, battery-to-engine block cable and solenoid-to-starter cable. While they are off, inspect each for corrosion, broken insulation with corrosion and weak points. Replace corroded or weak cables.

If it still won't start, remove starter and clean all surfaces where engine block and starter connect.

I agree with ..jtexas...

I would guess starter......

Mine would do the same thing about 2 wks ago

Put on new starter...Good to go

Bad spot on starter..(inside starter)

They told me...they always stop in the same place, I dont know if its true or not, But after doing what jtexas has said and still driving me nuts..Put on new starter,,works great...good luck

took about 30 min to change...mine cost $164.50

FYI the starter will NOT always stop in the same place. There is no method, electrical or mechanical, to control where it stops. The starter will spin until voltage is removed, then it coasts to a stop.

I got the boat fixed earlier. I went back and started checking every connection. I replaced one terminal connection but it was not for the motor. I eventually found it was that metal strip that connects the starter to the solenoid. it was a little dirty and I took it off and cleaned it w/ a wire brush. Starts every time now. Just got back from the lake and cant tell it was sick. Even got a few Crappie out of it.

Thanks for the replies, everyone on here has always been very helpfull.
