Hey guys and gals, I have a 2 stroke Johnson 130 with the dreaded VRO oil injection system. I spent 300 bucks on a new pump because it went bad and started leaking externally. I didnt want to do the bypass and mix my own oil and fuel because I liked the fact that noone had done that yet, and I could just fill the oil reservoir and go.Seems like lately it has been smoking excessively when at idle or just above idle. It doesnt foul out the plugs or run bad, but occassionally I will have another boat approach trying to "rescue us" because they think the dang thing is on fire. The real question is, Has anyone here bypassed the VRO on a Johnson and if so, did it help the excessive smoke condition?

More than likely disconecting the VRO will make it smoke more at idle. The vro cuts back oil when the motor is at lower rpm and doesnt need as much which should decrease smoke if it is working corectly. VRO has a bad rap for failing and F***ing your power head that is why the vast majority of them have been removed. If you are running the VRO and a full synthetic it probably smokes as little now as it ever will.

Another thing to consider it will look like it smokes alot more in the colder temps, just like you can see your truck exhaust on cold mornings, but it realy isnt any more smoke than normal... jsut something to think about.

You might try running the tank down low and topping it off with another oil like E-TEC XD100 (or XD50 to save a few bucks). E-TEC oil isn't cheap but it is good stuff. The full synthetic XD100 should have the lowest smoke.

If he is already running a full synthetic I doubt switching to a different oil is going to change much.

Im not sure, but I know on some oiling units they are set to run rich for a while, you may check to see if the oiler was set to do this or not, I kinda doubt it but who knows. Also just may be out of what, check with the person you had put the new VRO on.
