My wife and I are planning a week's vacation in the Destin area this summer, and she says that I can spend a day fishing. I'd like to target Tarpon on spinning tackle (not good enough with fly rod). I'd appreciate any recommendations, or warnings, yall might have!

I was a CSI before CSI's were cool!

i lived in ft.walton beach for years. not going to be great tarpon fishing as they are scarce in that area. having said that the fishing is EXCELLENT for everything else. the destin charter boat fleet is 1/2 mile boat ride from the destin pass and you can be 125 ft of water in less than 3 miles. i highly suggest googling "destin charter boat fleet" they all work under one roof so when you call and tell them what trip you want they will put you on one of many good boats. hollar at me if you have any questions. P.S - eat at AJ's when you are there, yoir wife will love it.

Lite spinning tackle, leader and a spoon will keep you busy on the beach. Look for schooling fish hammering bait. Carry extra spoons or use a very lite wire leader about 4-5" long. Spec rigs work also. Stop by Half Hitch tackle. Very cool place. They will help get you rigged.

Try Destiny Unbound. The do all sorts of fishing around Destin and Panama City. Tarpon are found in numbers to the east of Panama City at proper times of year.
