Hello guys n gals...new to this forum and would like to get some info on the pass relative to wade fishing.

I had a beach house on the penninsula, but Mr. Ike relieved me of it unfortunately. I fished the pass nearly every weekned for 4 years and grew to love it. I have NOT fished it since Ike for various reasons and would like to know how the wadefishing is on the bay side in terms of debris and depth outside of the pass itself...

Just wondering if anyone has had any issues with debris (stuff in the water that bangs your shins etc) while wadefishing the bay side?

Is the depth still relatively the same as before Ike, or was there a significant washout...?

Bobby I see people wading every time I'm there and it looks the same as before to me .
There was a guy and his wife wading barefoot yesterday afternoon so debris must not be a problem .

I wade fish the gulf side mouth of Rollover Pass all the time and there is no issues what so ever. Still wear sandals by choice but my buddy goes barefoot. Usually waist/chest deep and have been killing the specs and sand trout lately.

I have been there several times already, no debri at all!!! Some soft mud in some areas, and I mean some, majority is hard and great to stand for wading. Its is really nice!!! I 'll be there in about 3 weeks for a week vacation and will be wading out here for most of my stay. Best times to catch you some is early in the morning about 5-6 AM in incoming tide. Good luck, have fun, and be safe!

I fished Rollover this past Saturday...and as posted had no problems at all. The landscape at the pass has changed since Ike (first time I've been back since lsoing my beach house)...especially the long spoil bank on the west bayside.

I fished with live shrimp starting at 6:45 AM....caught LOTS of sandies and specs with a couple of Reds and a Flounder thrown in. ALL were just under size limits and the sandies really too small to keep as well.

I did get a NICE hookup with a larger trout but she threw the hook before I landed it. The smaller trout were obviously working the pass because when they would hit, all the non-game fish (croakers and horsemackerals) would be no-where to be found. As soon as the trout quit hitting, the croakers and horsemackerals would return. This happened all morning til about 11:00 AM. I was sure hopin some big-boys would be patrollin the area but I never landed any keepers other than 2 specs that went 15....but I typically only keep the 17-20 inch range so I released the two 15's...

The Reds went 18 and about 14....The 18 that hit darn near pulled the rod out of my hand...He hit my free lined shrimp heading the opposite direction and I thought I had a "good un"...but alas, just a sore mouthed juvi wink

One thing that confused me though, was the tide charts showed a HIGH tide at 9:52 AM on Saturday...unless I completely mis-read it. We had a slow OUTgoing tide all morning which had me confused as I and other waders I spoke too ALL thought we would have some incoming current mid morning...

I had the same luck at rollover a week ago. All small trout and the tides didn't seem to jive with what I had read. I figured I just didn't have the adjustment correct. I'm going back down maybe mid September.

Welcome to the forum, if I haven't said that before.

Hey Bobby,When you wading, were you fishing with the incoming or outgoing tide?

Hookem', the tide was OUTgoing all morning...which was a bit peculiar because the tide charts showed a high tide at 9:52 for Rollover.

when I entered the bay, the tide was a slow moving outgoing tide...then about an hour or so it was a slack tide....So I am waiting for the turn (which never came). When the water started moving again it was going out and continued until I left at 11:30. I guess I read the tide chart incorrectly, but I don't know how...since it ain't exactly rocket surgery or brain science...

Here is the tide info I used: Saltwater Tides dot com

Tides for Rollover Pass starting with August 19, 2011.

Day High Tide Height Sunrise Moon Time % Moon
/Low Time Feet Sunset Visible

F 19 High 9:37 AM 1.2 6:46 AM Set 11:56 AM 77
19 Low 5:47 PM 0.2 7:53 PM Rise 10:59 PM

Sa 20 High 9:52 AM 1.2 6:46 AM Set 12:50 PM 69
20 Low 6:31 PM 0.2 7:52 PM Rise 11:38 PM

Su 21 High 8:10 AM 1.2 6:47 AM Set 1:45 PM 60

Thanks Bobby, The tide movement there can a bit inaccurate at times. No telling what happened. I have been told in the past to added a couple of hours to the tide predictions due to the location of Rollover PAss. But that being said, thats not always true neither. But any report from there is a great and better report than no report at all. Thanks again.

My wife and I will taking a short vacation in Galvested, but she will be shopping while I will be at Rollover PAss doing the fishing. I plan on doing plenty of wading on the bay side and night fishing with the popping cork live shrimp rig. Maybe some surf with some plastics. But I look forward more for the wading!
We will be there on about Sept the 14th and a few extra days there after.

Yeah thats what I've always done...found the tide for Galveston then made the adjustments; however, the site I used above is "supposed" to make those adjustments for each area...or thats what I thought anyways....guess I need to do more research.

I plan on going down this Saturday and high tide is "supposed" to be around 8:52 or so...sure hope that is accurate because that could make for a good morning of fishing...

I just checked the tide chart site I have been using ( Tide Chart ), and it appears it DOES indeed make the calculations for each area. According to this site the tides for some key areas are:

Galveston Bay - South Jetty entrance
High @ 4:20 AM
Low @ 8:07 AM

Rollover Pass
High @ 8:54 AM
Low @ 2:01 PM

Eagle Point
High @ 10:33 AM
Low @ 11:50 AM

Outside of the Eagle Point low (which seems very quick to me)these tide tables SEEM to fall in line in terms of locale and timing of the subsequent change in tides. So, I am going to bank on them being accurate and assume last week was an aberration (hate assuming...always gets me in trouble)

Yeah I know what you mean about the morning wading thing. Man I can't wait. I just hope that when I go that my luck doesn't turn sour.

Regardless, I just look forward to some serene and peaceful moments wading early in the morning. I wish you well!!!

Try this for unconfusing tide movements.

http://midgewater.twdb.state.tx.us/bays_estuaries/framegalvwind.html

I was at the Galveston North Jetties, last Saturday (8/27/11.) This was accurate while my buddy was confused.

Using this data, only thing a person needs is to understand how much the water rises or drops. Example... 6 hrs between high to low tides - 1.7 ft. Translate to 0.28 ft/hr, this really does not mean the water is droping 0.28 ft/hr steadily. Using the date.. one can pinpoint when the MOVEMENT of the tide is at it's greatest ebb.

"Screw Ya'll, I am going fishing.
