How many HP? If it is the two line system you will need a tank with the two hose connector set up on it. It is a pressure tank, the piston moving supplies the pressure to the tank which keeps the carb full of gas. What kind of condition is it in? Turns over easily?

Clean the carb real good, and make sure the tank holds pressure. If after it runs for a second and you loosen the gas cap off the tank and it hisses at you when its loosened you are holding pressure. If it doesn't hiss, you have a leak somewhere. Fix that leak with new hose, whatever it takes. If it still won't run after that let us know and we will go from there. Functional parts are still available at www.iboats.com and other places. Get a water pump kit when you get the carb kit. Make sure you can get a carb kit with a float. That needs to be replaced.

They are alot of fun, I have a '57 7.5 hp and wish it was a 15 like yours. Mine isnt in great looking condition, lots of missing paint, but it runs good but smokes... alot!

Mine had been sitting for several years when I got it, I had to rebuild carbs and redo the plug wires, and one of the plugs didnt work so I replaced them as well and changed the lower unit lube.

I changed the impeller, which is a pain because on mine you have to pull the power head to get to the shift shaft, hope yours has the coupler so you dont have to.

I bet the 15 has the coupler, my 55 10HP did. I found a company on ebay that sold service manuals in CD form. Cost about 10.00 bucks but was a good thing to have. My 55 would start about half way through the 1st pull when it was warm. Took a couple when first cranking for the day. Great motors. Getcha a fly wheel puller and make sure the coils and points are good. I was lucky, I only had to change the gap on the points, the coils were good. If they have any cracks in them replace them. Not too expensive and will make a huge difference in the quality of your spark. And put a filter in the line going to the carb. You don't need the old two line hose, go to the auto parts store and take the connector with you so they can get a hose that will fit the barb. A common air leak is the O rings in the tank connector. I was having rough idling and replaced those two O rings (they are still available) and fixed that right up.

Hey sbump if I wanted to get an original metal presurized tank for one where would I go, if I could still get one. I have happened upon a couple, but they were all rotted out. Right now I run it on a modified plastic tank, but it is... not good grin

Dont want to spend a boatload on it, but if they can be had with in reason I would like to.

I haven't checked lately, but there used to be some on ebay. Some good and others not so good. There is a website, can't remember what it is, but it is folks that restore old boat motors and they swap parts and stuff. I found that site through www.iboats.com. Post on the Johnson/Evinrude forum that you are looking for a tank, somebody will chime in.

i seen 2 on there a few minutes ago. they also have new gas line to. my tank was in the sun today and i took the cap off it and it had pressure on it with the lines hooked on it so does it mean my tank is good? it pumps gas right out when i took lines off

That sounds good. If it pumped gas out of the connector when not connected to motor, that doesn't sound good. If you disconnect from motor and hit the pump button, no gas should come out, the tank should get pressurized. If gas comes out, replace the O rings in the connector.

The old pressurized tanks are getting hard to come by not to mention expensive. A lot of those older engines could be retrofitted with pulsating fuel pumps. I have done several. It's just a matter of drilling/tapping/ and closing the air port hole. It's not cheep but it will bring the motor up into the 20th century. It will also allow you to run any new style fuel tank and get away from the old obsolute tank.
