I hear about slicks, what the heck are they and what am I looking for? What do you throw at them when you find them?

I think they mean slack or non moving water. Like and eddy behind a rock in a stream.Fish like to hold on the edges of moving water to ambush prey as it moves by.just my $.02 Mark

Not exactly...

Trout will school up and massacre schools of bait, shrimp etc. They become so frantic they'll eat, then hurl up their guts to keep eating. The oils from the bait will cause a mini slick to appear. Best slicks are the size of a garbage can lid. And will usually have a sweet watermelon smell to them. Nothing will stop my scooter faster than that smell....

Smacks leave a taco smell.

Just happened to take this picture the other day.
Head high to the right of the fisherman, just below the flyrod, and between the rod and his head slicks are a smoother sheen on the water even with choppy water. Series of slicks moving off down wind.
Shallow grass beds that reach the water surface can make the water look like slicks. Look where the fisherman is standing and to the left of him shoulder high.
The watermelon smell, noticing repeated slicks come up and move off with the wind or current indicates slicks.
Flat water not moving but in the same place indicates it is very shallow/ grass grown up to the surface.

There are actually a lot of slicks in the water as TOO explained. Well done TOO Besides the grass slicks there are organic oils from decomposition in the bay floor that can float up and make a slick, passing boats with oil leaks, a jet ski burning too rich even and large schools of bait fish. Some look entirely different,,, some don't. Also when crabs eat bait from crab traps... oil is released and makes a slick... in fact that leads me to the number one rule of fishing slicks... make sure you check up wind for crab trap buoys before fishing a "trout" slick.

There are also a lot of hypothesis on slicks other than the regurgitation mentioned above..which is correct but not the only method. Just in a normal feed when a trout eats a small drop of stomach content can be forced out and that's all it takes. a tiny droplet... even seen fish in tank [censored] when scared? do you think fish in the bay / gulf do that? eat an oil baitfish and the poo is going to be oily too at least to some extent.. I was first introduced to this by my fish tank expert Spencer...LOL. but it's true for trout as well...
