can you get away with using mono and soft plastics on a jighead? i know its best to use braid or fluro but i dont have anymore money to spend on braid for my trip.

I have used mono forever while fishing plastics...maybe a leader when the spanish macks are around...Depending where you are fishing any line size between say 12lb-17lb should work. Now this is for inshore, out in the blue someone else here could help you better than I can.
