I'm going to pick up a optima battery today and need to know which one to get for starting battery. Blue top I suppose? Which size for 250 hp yamaha?

I would not buy an Optima. The Platinum Series from Sears are a few dollars cheaper and they have a much better warranty. 36 month non-prorated. Hard to beat. 31 Series is some serious battery.

I must have totally over looked this when I was on their site from my iPhone but I just looked again from my laptop an they have a pdf you can download that gives you what they recommend.

It says for Yamaha 2 Strokes from 150 - 300 HP HPDI that you need the 675.

Looks like the only motors that need 1000 cranking amps is most 4 Strokes and some mecury & evinrude motors. There isn't one Yamaha outboard motor on the list that needs 1000 amps.

Go to Batteries Plus and get their in house cranking marine battery gel cell blue top, they have groups 27 29 and 31. All the cranking amps you need and then some on all three. Great battery, we use them for stuff at work that are a lot harder on them than a boat and they last a long time. The more CCA you get the better dude.

Don't get the minimum CCA and allow reserve capacity to run all your other electronics.

How much are these other gel batteries you guys are talking about? The reason I ask is because Bass Pro will price match for me. I have about $50 in bass pro points and a $10 off coupon so I wanted to use that. I think Auto Zone has the Optima at $180 so I was going to use that as a price match.

Yeah Chad they are about 250, but have a 5 year warranty if you keep up with your receipt. I can't recall if the BPS is 5 years or not.

Really? Well, if only CCA mattered you wouldn't need any reserve capacity or RC.

In battery construction, the more CCAs you buy in a given size, the less RC(minutes)you get. Many boaters are buying too much CCAs and after making a run across the lake, they run their livewells all or much of the day and then their big CCA battery doesn't crank because it is almost dead.

Buy enough CCA as your motor calls for and actually uses and then get as much RC as you can afford and still fit in your battery compartment. Extra CCA s are just a waste of weight and space. RC is what will get you back to the dock.

Glad you mentioned this. I'm not a expert on batteries so I never wanted to say anything before but I wondered why would more CCA's matter when all that is for is cranking over. If 600 CCA cranks me over then why would I need another 400?

What does the price of a boat have to do with Optima batteries? I'm sure I could have went with the biggest CCA out there and called it good but is that really the best option?

If you think calling your dealer is going to give you all the right answers then you're a sucker.
