I have fly fishing guide friends that float the Colorado upstream from there (Austin Colony to Webberville City Park or Webberville City Park to Webberville County Park), but I don't know much about the stretch downstream from there.

There are no fish in the Colorado river . . . I do very well on baitfish patterns and anything that fishes similar to a jig. Austins Colony put a barrier up to the river path, its a long carry now but doable if you are in decent shape.
It's more than the catfish would do.

I can't tell you how many times I've crossed there at La Grange and looked longingly at that swirling green water. A full report is expected, mister.

Hopefully it will be a good one...I was told by someone who fishes it regularly that the flows just went way up in the last two weeks, so fishing has changed dramatically, but it'll be nice to fish new water.

Well, long story short...
Flows are WAY up, so pretty much any and all ripples/pools are blown out. Only pulled out the whippy stick for a LEETULE bit (windy and the fact that I took two first time fisher-folks made me more of a baby sitter than a fisher). Still had a great time on the river, and it sure is a pretty piece of water. The folks I took had a blast and want to go back again, which is fine by me. Hopefully next time she won't be running quite so hard and some fish will be caught (yes, we all got skunked).

http://water.weather.gov/ahps2/hydrograp...15,6&type=0 The flows are pretty intense right now. Dont feel bad though, I fished LBL form 6am till 1 pm and caught 0 bass for the fourth trip in a row, broke an 8wt, and the alternator of my ride went sizzle. At least I always have the crutch

Where did all this extra water come from?

The extra water comes out of LCRA's storage in the Highland Lakes. They have big water contracts with the rice farmers in the lower basin. Tis the season to flood the rice fields. If you look at the historic hydrograph at the CO river @ Austin, Bastrop, Smithville, and Wharton gages you will see the same seasonal trend.
A general rule of thumb for the CO east of Austin, fishing is phenomenal from Nov-March and mediocre from the end of Mar-Oct. You can still have a good day during rice season, you just have to watch the hydrograph and time it right.
Hope that helps.

Ahh, that makes perfect sense. I knew it didn't fall out of the sky (at least recently), but I wasn't sure where it was being released from. Thanks for the information.
