Can anyone clue me in on shark fishing in the surf? I am heading to Port A and aransas pass tonight and will be fishing in the surf. My plan was to catch something, cut it in half and throw it on a big treble hook. I got 17 pound test and a steel leader. I was also planning on sinking this thing with a heavy weight and then drink beer until my line starts swimming. Good idea? Any Help would be GREATLY appreciated!!

it'd be an awesome fight on 17# line but i think it'd be very short. my surf rig has 30# line with an 80# topshot and 150# mono leader with a 14/0 circle hook. this is prolly considered 'light' for shark fishing. i just want reds, tho. sharks are fun side gigs. you got the waiting and drinking part right, tho heh heh.

take him fishing

Might want to bay fish with 17# line. I caught one on a heavy surf rod that had 50# and i dont think it was so much the fish as it was the surf goin out, man a small fish feels big when they are goin with the currrent.

I would lip hook the bait and try to keep it alive! Lip hooking in current is about the only way you will keep a set up down in current w/o using so much weight that a pole with 17# test would have a hard time pulling in just the bait and weight!

Good luck!

I have had good luck catching sharks in the surf off of Bolivar Peninsula. I take a good surf rod with at least 30# test and connect a premade leader with two hooks and a heavy star sinker. What is a star sinker you ask. That is what I call a sinker that has four pieces of thick wire sticking out of it. You angle these wires out and when thrown in the surf they dig in and keep your line tight. I usually try to catch croaker to use as bait, hooking them throught the nose to keep them alive. I usually catch small sharks or large gaftops. Either way, it is fun.
