i am wanting to build a minnow or perch tank to keep bait alive. i figure i will need a big poly tank, but i do not know what type of aerator or pump system will be best. it will be kept at trailer house near lake and need to run off 110 volt electricity. do you guys have any tips on what would be the best set up?

I have a pretty extensive setup I have had aerators that suck in air to help oxygenate, air stones, recycling water through refrigerator to keep temp cool, saltwater grade filter systems and the list goes on and this single item kept bait alive longer than any other additions to my tank period. I have ran this by it self and kept minnows for several weeks with very little dead loss....

hey, thanks a bunch. what size tank did you use? is poly or galvanized the best way to go? has the aerator been pretty reliable? long lasting? did you just cut a hole in a board, place over the tank, and rest the aerator on top of the board? or did you tie,or suspend the aerator some other way? thanks for the input.

The bigger the tank the better results you will have as the temps will not change as fast and your bait will not get temp shock as bad. With a 100gallon tank you should be fine usingjust aireators. If its in an always shaded area the cooling is not nearly as nescesarry. Another idea is to use a standard fishtank water filter instead or aireator. It may be cheaper and will surely last longer as it is made to run constantly while an aireator for live well is only really meant to run when you have bait onboard. Another option may be to get a minnow trap and just leave your bait in the lake

I got a 100 gal. poly tank from Tractor Supply and fountain/ filter/ areator from Home Depot. This set up has kept bait alive for weeks at a time for the last couple of years. Hints, keep in an area with all day shade and make sure you de-chlorinate the water when adding from the hose. One other thing, I use a heavy wire cover over the top for ventilation and to keep the coons and cats out.
