I just spent the last two days fishing Amistad and saw something I have never seen before. I was catching bass in one particular area of the lake and noticed something while removing the hooks from those fish. Inside of the roofs of their mouths were little 1 inch leeches and several deep sore spots. These bass were fat and healthy but there is no way for them to remove the leeches themselves. I pulled out those leeches with my needle nose pliers and killed them, and no I didn't throw the leeches back into the water.
My problem is I can't get it out of my mind on what kind of effect this may have on the fish.
In hind sight I should have notified the parks and wildlife about it. So tomorrow I am gonna call a friend of mine here in San Angelo that works for the TPWD and let him know of this location and let him get ahold of someone down there to see if they are aware of this problem. And try to get some insight on how they can fight or solve this problem.
I realize either birds transfered them to the water or someone has been fishing with leeches, I also know this will also spread thoughout the lake population if not contained. BUT how do you or how can you stop the spread of it?
I don't know if anyone else has come across this on any other lake, but I wanted to get this information out so my fellow anglers and tournament guys that fish Amistad can start looking for it so we can get an idea of how spread out throughout the lake it is, and I'll try and find out how the TPWD can work with us on this issue.
If one of you guides down there want to email me I'll give you the location so you can see for yourself these bass, and maybe you could take them to the TPWD guys on the water to show them what is happening.

I have caught tons of bass with little black worms beneath the first layer of skin in their mouths. Most of the worms are between 1/4 and 1/2 inch. Never paid it much attention.

You are not the first to catch a bass with a leech in it's mouth. That has been going on for some time now. We caught bass in San Pedro to 26 that had the little black leeches in there mouth. There has been Bass Champs and BLT going on where parks and wildlife are present. All the fish look to be in good shap.

We caught bass in the Rain God with leeches and at mile marker 21 with leeches, last weekend.

Hopefully Carl with Anglers Lodge will see this post and chime in. If anybody knows fish care and Lake Amistad it is him.

They've had them for a while. They look healthy otherwise. I'm pretty sure TPWD is aware by now. I believe Carl has been banned form this forum for quite sometime also.

It only seems to happen during the winter I think the leaches get in the basses mouth to stay warm!
Seriously though I am sure they have no effect on the fish, we have a small lake that has them and the biologist that checks it out for us says they cause no harm and are natural.

Seen it before, kinda freaked me out, but after catching a few more I always thought it wasn just a thing that happens to some bass and not others.

Leaches are like Herpes. They don't look nice but you can live with them.
