I am new to kayak fishing. What is the best way to carry caught fish?
Thanks

I've got a good fish bag but mostly just stringer then set em in between my legs when I'm under way. (A tricky proposition with a stringer of catfish!) IMO, the options are.... STRINGER: Harder on the catch and you have to bring it in to paddle effectivly. Easy cleanup and doesnt' take space on the yak. COOLER: Keeps the fish cold, Takes up more space, catches wind. Easy to clean. FISH BAG: The ones made for yaks have a low profile so not affected by wind all that much. Designed to fit to the kayak bow, so not really taking up space used for something else. Keeps the catch cold but won't hold temp in the hot Texas sun as well as a good cooler. More effort to keep clean and can get poked through with a fin. CATCH & RELEASE:None of the aforementioned problems but nothing in the pan either.

Large fish I put on a stringer and drag behind the kayak if I'm going short distances and try to keep them alive as long as possible before having to stuff them into a cooler.
Smaller fish go into my ice chest(cooler).
I sometimes carry a floating fish basket if the catching is hot and heavy as during the white bass season. When the basket starts getting full I'll pull up on the bank and transfer them to the cooler.

been cool enough lately ive been throwing them in my crate/basket. currently workin on something so i dont have to concern myself with it no mo. my buddys are throwing them in buckets with a little creek water (ice water). BUCKET -check out the nice lid flap. folks round here just throw them away so they are easy to come by. well worth buying IMO because they're cheap regardless. they would make a nice shad bucket too cause the inside is not square Meeoow!

I used to use a conventional stringer, but did not like the impact it had on tracking when there were several fish on the stinger (and did not want to take the fish out of the water to paddle). So - based on another kayaker's recommendation, I built a floating stringer. Sorry, don't have a pic, but picture a length of line about 10 feet long with a float on one end (same type float you would find on a saltwater wade fisherman's stringer) and a clip on the other end to attack to the kayak. In-between, there are a dozen wire clips to hold the fish. The length of the line allows the stringer to align virtually directly behind the kayak when underway, so it does not interfere with tracking. And the clips do a good job of keeping the fish alive.

That's a good idea, but where I fish for whites there are gators so the fish basket is a little safer, at least I haven't had the fish attacked while in the basket, but I still prefer the ice chest. Good idea for lakes or rivers where gators won't be a problem. I've never had fish on a stringer attacked so let me say that, but it gives me goosebumps when I think about those big ones I've seen up on the bank while fishing.

in creeks my stringer get tugged too much. a few snags & there goes all the paper mouths & usually a few sandies. some one last spring lost about 8 nice sandies when their stinger came loose from their yak. its happened in the power boat too. left the stringer hanging over the side. just plum forgot to bring it in after a long day of fishing. took off & by the time i get back to the ramp id be lucky if i still had lips hanging on the clips. only cats can take that kind of abuse :~( have lost a few good ones like this. have seen some real nice stringer lost in similar ways. i try to stay away from them now unless its real hot & i run out of ice. just about done with my new mods so ill try & post a few pics soon.

Yep! Stringer are notorious for that! You fish and use a stringer long enough it will happen!

Once I lost a stringer with about a dozen whites on it because it slipped out of my hand when I was trying to put number 13 on and the fish squirmed (my reflexes were to grab the fish with both hands - farewell to the stringer). I felt sick about it because I knew those dozen fish died wastefully, unless the bottom feeders enjoyed an easy meal. With my new system that won't happen because the end with the carabiner stays attached to the kayak the entire time I'm using it. I'm also limited to a dozen fish, which I appreciate very much when it's cleaning time.

That happened to me too. It was a real shock and disappointment but mine were catfish.
I've been using a metal stringer and that has worked well because it stays connected to the kayak while I am placing the fish on it.

Like to offer advise regarding metal stringers: found that they dont work in the salt very well. probably a few metal salt stringers out there that im not of aware of. if there are, they are probably expensive. all the ones ive used were trashed after less than a week of salt water. also, IMO its require that you snap 2 clips when stringing big fish. big is a matter of opinion so if you have a nice fish my advise is use two snaps. otherwise they will spin & open your one clip & gone. notice how YaknYota stings his. In case theirs someone on here that doesnt know YaknYota likes to catches big fish for a living. (not promoting just telling it like it is)
