I wonder if the boat motor manufacturers can build their motors to handle more ethanol...like our cars?

I would bet the overall percentage of fuel used in boats is so fractionally small, you would need scientific notation to write it down. I think it's hard to expect "them" to provide E-free gas when there is such a small market. If they did, and charged enough for it to cover their expense, we would all be up in arms over the price.

Obviously I don't know enough about the issue to make real judgements but just my thoughts...

Yes, for 4 strokes. Car engines can be made to run safely on pure ethanol so 4 stroke boat motors should be the same.

The 2 stroke's probably cannot do much more than they are doing now. Reason being their exhaust runs through the inside of the engine washing the cylinder walls and all the wear points. Too much ethanol and your engine loses its oil protection.

Also, JMO.

Thanks to all who have signed the petition. We still need more to meet our goal of 10,000. Just in case you did not know... from Mercury's website: Will the use of fuels containing ethanol void my engine warranty? Fuels containing up to 10 percent ethanol are considered acceptable for use in Mercury engines. Fuels containing higher levels of ethanol are not considered acceptable for use, and the use of fuels containing ethanol higher than 10 percent can void the warranty.
And from Yamaha Can I use fuel with a higher percentage of ethanol, such as E15 or E85? No, all of the negative issues discussed in this FAQ section will be increased and may cause major damage to the engine.

One of the biggest scams ever put over on the "common" man. Ethanol will not work and man-made global climate change, warming or what ever they change the name to when they lose ground, is an out and out lie. Freedom is becoming a memory. Please help vote these fools out. Check out page 26 Dec 2010 BassTimes. They don't care what you think or how many petitions you sign. E15 has already been approved by the EPA. They don't care what you think.
