really im just looking for an excuse to but one of those casting reels that look like a trolling reel, but im not sure if thats the right thing to use? would i be fine just using a spinning set up or what?

You're not going to find much shark in the surf this time of year. At least I haven't seen any in a while. Need a boat to get at them now, maybe even a kayak.
The only thing dumber than a fish is a fisherman.

ive got a kayak, but honestly i dont think ill be headed out to the coast this winter. i think the earliest ide go out is next spring? im just wondering what kind of gear people use while shore fishing? ill never have a boat to fish from (aside from my kayak) so i need to know how to equip myself for shore fishing. i guess it would help to know what im fishing for though right? big fish ... whatever big fish we have on our coast that i can fish for from the shore. ill figure that part out later, right now im interested in what kind of rod and reel people would suggest?

your going to want either big baitcasters (preferably with a 10ft+ pole, but not required). or big spinning tackle for sharks. I prefer the baticasters because of the clicker when something grabs it you can hear it. But it is more helpful when night fishing or if your casting lures on light tackle for specks with the rods behind you. I usually like to leave a couple rods out with mullet then leave em be and cast some lures. 8/0+ circle hooks are what you want, and at least a 3ft steel leader, preferably more. would recommend at the very least 25lbs mono. best months for shark on the coast are the last 2 weeks of september till the start of november. Good luck

Don't know about the reds since I haven't targeting them for a while now. But there are loads of sand trout.
Your bass gear will do fine. Go sinker rig with small hook and shrimp. I made my own rod from broken rods. One is about 3 and the other is about 5. Pretty good for sand trout.

Your "bass gear" should be fine for reds and trout in the bays. Just rinse your tackle thouroghly when finished.

Bass gear is much more fun. I just recommended heavy gear for surf fishing because usually that intales using a 4oz+ spider weight and trying to pull it out of the sand with bass gear can not go well, nor can pull a bull red or big shark over the sandbars. And you would not be able to hold enough line to fish the third gut from shore on a bass reel

i figured i could probably get away with using my bass gear for fish up to 20lbs. i used to do it all the time while carp fishing. (yes, im a carp angler. eeew yuck, carp!) now i have 12' rods and use 40lb braid while carping. at first i thought i could get away with using my carp gear as surf gear but my rods are only 3lb TC (top 6' is like a med action bass rod) so they wouldnt be good for hauling anything over about 60lbs with any frequency. not only that but the line capacity on my reels isnt that great. i think i can only get about 200-250 yards or so of 40lb braid on there?
i suppose i can pick up a couple of 10' shore casting rods from cabelas with those cheapy $55.oo conventional abu garcias they have?
thanks for the help fellas, and thanks for the link WHAT. its a good read!

No problem. I don't think the abu's are cheap. I've had my 6500c3 for 11 years and its still pulling in bull reds. But in the surf it does not have enough line (30lb mono) to reach the 3rd gut so i just use it as my bait rod. I'm sure if i were to put braided line on the abu it would have enough line to fish the surf but im not a big fan of braided line.
You're bass gear should be good to go for the bays. Just don't forget to rinse it off after EVERY use.

I just have Academy's cheap 50$ baitcaster combos. only thing that sucks is they are short rod, which is great for drum catching in my kayak but as for surf fishing, not so much. Still the reel holds enough line (i used 25lbs mono) to make it to the 3rd gut with some sense or security in have a bit of line left over, its a long wade to cast each time though. Best of luck to you, May the Fish be with you.

Casts a lot smoother and further without the worm and with the 8ft heavy action pole i bought for it.

Well i guess its easier to explain if i would have said the guide. But yea, the worm gear and the guide. It wasn't working right on my reel. The guide would stay on one side and get my line all tangled up. I tried to clean it a few times but it just kept doing it so i took that sob off!
