I go to school at TTU and am an avid fly fisher. The trouble I am having is that there are not many good places to fish in this area. I have caught some enourmous carp on my 4 weight and have a few bass bluegill and catfish mixed in but Im not getting the production here that I normally get really just about any where else. Is there anyone out there who fishes this region that might have some tips that could up my production in this region. Typically I use many different kind of nymphs, olive and black woolyboogers, briminators and clauser swimming nymphs. I have yet to catch a fish on topwater and have all but given up with my normal poppers, amys ants, gurglers, etc.. If somebody out there knows a few tricks that could help expland thee bariety of fish that im catching I would really aappreciate it.

Then you have arrived, Grasshopper.

Feel free to elaborate; should be some great stories.

Someone should be along any minute with relevant answers, but welcome to the Forum.

As a TTU alumni (although they still called us ex-students when I graduated), all I can say is to graduate as quick as possible and move. There is just not much water around Lubbock.

Good luck,
Rex

I would say that isn't true, you just have to work a little harder for your fish.

The Canyon Lakes on the north side of town have alot of bream and bass in them. Especially the ones downstream, east of Ave Q. I have had 100 fish days be common.

Alan Henry, with it's steep banks, makes for great fly fishing for bass. The banks are wind blocked and allows great presentation.

If you can get access, head up to the Pease River NW of there. It is remote and pristine.

As an angler who grew up in Lubbock, I feel your pain. I followed RexW's suggestion and moved away ASAP out of high school, but my folks still live there and my dad fly fishes the area frequently.

As you probably know the local playa lakes are excellent carp fisheries, not much for bass and sunfish. As a kid, we would go down the street to the local playa a few days after a rain event and catch carp in the flooded grass areas of the parks by hand.

Besides the playas, we had a family farm stock tank full of bass, bluegill, and catfish. If you can find a farmer/rancher willing to let you fish his tank, you've got it made. I realize most of the angling oppurtunities in the Panhandle are lentic systems (playa lakes, ponds, reservoirs), but the one thing you got going for you living in Lubbock is the proximity to Northern New Mexico. If all else fails, hop in the car and drive 6 hours and fish the Valle Vidal, Red River, Chama, Rio Grande, etc.

Ah yes...don't underestimate the beauty of being 4 hours from Cloudcroft and Ruidoso. There is alot of great fly fishing in central/southern NM.

Even there on the Pecos is awesome.

The largest carp Ive pulled out of there was right around 18 and a half pounds and measured 30 in +- 2in. I had a boga grip with me but no tape measure. the length was estimated by putting the tail at ground level and then holding him up along side my leg. The mouth came up to just below the hip joint which when i measured at home came to 32 in but because of the imprecision of my method I decided to shave off about 2 in. It took me right around 25-30 min to bring it in. I had to be extremely careful because I had put about a 12 ft leader on. It was by far the largest freshwater fish I have ever caught. Other than a few more avg size ones though Im not getting much production. I did pull out a 3 lb bass off the dam at CL#2 but that was pure dumb luck. This is directed at LL you say you have had 100+ days in the canyon lakes? What are you fishing and what part of the lake? Because I fish there every day and catch maybe 9-10 very small catfish, bass and sometimes blue gill at the most. Thanks for all the posts though Im new to this and was not expecting this fast of a response

One other carp I caught over in ransome canyon was 10 lbs. He was no slouch either. I spotted hm about 10 ft from me so I just flip cast over into this little pool hie was in. He took it and it took about 10-15 to bring him in. if you want to catch good carp though go down to ransom canyon near the flat part of the levy. Its literally crawling with them by the hundreds all in about 2-3 ft of water

Directed to LL: What kind of flies are you using to catch these bream. Ive never actually caught a bream. Ive had the most luck withthe smaller fish using various nymph patterns, woolyboogers, and different topwater patterns. If you dont have any hesitation about letting me know i sure would like to find out. Last time i caught 100 or so fish in a day was down in the llano 3 or 4 weeks ago

I just sold some carp flies to a guy in Lubbock, so I hope there's some that can be reprogrammed to the fly.

100 bream/day in the Canyon Lakes. Usually fishing with small woolys, spiders, even weightless crappie tube jigs. Anything small. Like I said, east of Ave Q, there are some with trees overhanging, before you get to the old wooden bridge. Lay that fly near the bank they will bite.
