I wonder why the TPWD makes all the licenses expire in August still? Their electronic license system doubled our cost of our license when they implemented it, and it bogs down every year on September 1 because everyone is trying to get a license on the same day. It would be better for us and them if your license was good for a year from the day you bought it.
Anyone know what the reasoning is? I've sold licenses for them for many years up until 3years ago. Its a mess. Also hunters don't want to answer "how many did you bag" questions accurately, some clerks just press 0 through it all, becauuse they are all in a hurry because they've been waiting in line for too long. Seems logical to make a license good for a year to reduce the overload of processing, and be more fair to the sportsman who may not fish for 9 months one year.

I think alot of it is based on the fiscal year, which starts on September 1 every year. Keeps things alot simpler on their end when it comes to budgets and accounting.
Practically, it might work ok for fishing licenses, but what about for hunting? You buy a license say on November 20th, go out, fill all your tags, then what happens the following year on November 1st when you want to go deer hunting? That's where things start getting hairy.

Mine doesnt, my license expires in April. You can buy a license now that expires a year from when ever you buy it. I bought my boat in April of 2009 so my license always expires in April.

I've got a YTD license. It's a little more expensive, but it made more sense at the time.

It made more sense to me at the time to spend a few dollars more to fish in April then pay for a regular license that would expire 4 months down the road when August came around and i would have to pay for another one. It was cheaper to do the year-to-date license.

I bought the lifetime combo last August right before the price nearly doubled. I just hope it doesn't expire anytime soon.

It might make sense if TPWD would offer two year licenses. They could still use the same expiration date in August...maybe even offer a slight discount for getting a two year license. This could save time for all concerned, and not put as much strain on the processing system.
