For the last 3 weeks, at least, the lake has been covered up with seagulls and the associated fishing. Friday last week was covered up with flocks of gulls. I went yesterday and today(Mon. & Tuesday)and saw 5 on Monday and not one today. It's like someone threw a switch and they all had to leave at the same time. Plenty of Herons and Egrets but they are not as aggressive as the seagulls. Found fish without them but it sure was handy to have as a backup. Cliff Taft

This time of year, they will start to go away. I don't know where they all go, but they do go. You'll start seeing less and less of them from now until late September into October. Then, they'll start showing back up.
Here's a little trick I figured out a few years ago when I realized the coming and going trick: If you don't have a GPS, get one. When the gulls are active, mark those spots on your GPS. Over time, even though there may be little or no structure or cover to hold the fish, you'll realize that the gulls and the fish tend to come back to the same places over and over. Then when the gulls leave for the summer, you can still find those fish moving in and out of those same places.
I have some places marked on GV that are noted in my GPS as humps, but there really is no hump or depression or anything there. But 8 out of 10 times I can graph that spot and find fish.
The other advantage to this is that if you're like me, when the gulls start going crazy and you're going crazy marking and catching fish, you may not pay close attention to the bottom structure or cover. You may miss a really good hump in doing so. If you go ahead and mark those spots, then you can go back over them later and you might find some really well defined humps.
Good Luck.

The gulls have gone to the coast to make more birds.
Jeff, that is a great tip!

Thanks for the replies. I knew that they migrated but thought the leaving was gradual. From Friday to Monday they all left. They could make little ones here as far as I am concerned. Oh well I like to change my diet from fish to shrimp on occasion also. Cliff Taft

I was on the vine today...No birds.. Fish are still in the usual places... Very windy..caught fish in 28ft water.. The TP&W biology (sp) boat was out there for about 2 hrs..Had 4 guys on board checking different areas... They had a truck at the ramp at dove road...They would load something in it every once in a while. It had some kind of container on the back. I have never seen that before. I did take some pics of it. I thought it was interesting..

Any tips on how I might be able to find some of these sandies on Grapevine? I was looking forward to spotting the birds. I am apparently to late. Me and the kids are going on Saturday probably.

Just be on the look out for other boats. ie. boat show.
Or, the surface action is starting, so you can probably find them that way.

Ah, I get it! I don't want to piss anyone off by crowding them though.
