Yep,'bout 35 years of it. Im sure you prob. know by now R-12 is a dead deal. But you have two ways to go(concerning freon) "Freeze 12" when you can find it or convert to R134 and soon that will be history. Only drawback to converted 134 is it wont work quite as good as with a R12 condensor. But it's certainly better than nothin in this heat!

Is "Freeze 12" something I can do myself or do I need a pro to do it. And is it possible to put 134a in my system, or am I just reading ur response wrong? It's a semi daily driver and semi topless ( when I have room to put the hardtop in garage), so I don't want to spend lots of $$$

If the system is just low on freon you can use freeze 12. If it has compreessor damage etc. you prob. need to convert to 134. That means flushing all the r12 oil(mineral) out change service valve fittings to 134 type, add PAG oil. This conversion takes quite amount of time. Adding freeze 12 is just like using r12. Its just a "legal" replacement. Be sure to put in the proper amount.

The 134a you can buy the kit at walmart that has the fittings, gage and freon all in one kit, i think was about 35-40 bucks. Most vehicles will show somewhere under the hood on a sticker how much freon it takes. most cars are about 2 lbs i believe but look for the sticker or just call jeep and they can tell you.

I thought all cars had to be on R-134 by 1992. If your system is an R-12 system the first thing you need to do is check for leaks. I wouldn't convert to R-134 either. You will have to change out your drier and oil. Freeze 12 is okay but I use Dura Cool. 6 oz is equivilant to a pound of freon, you run lower head pressure and it cools as good or better than R-12. In an older car in the hot texas summer converting to R-134 will make you compressor run higher pressure putting more strain on it and possibly causing a premature failure. Google Dura Cool and Freeze 12. You can order on line and they make several additives to stop leaks. Harbor Frieght Tools had some great a/c guages on sale for 49 bucks.
