I am just curious you said there isnt alot of bass. But when you googel san marcos river fishing they show all these guided fly fishing tours with people catching some nice size bass in there so are they just covering alot of ground fishing from a tube and drifting down

There are a lot of bass in the San Marcos. Fish small cranks, spinners, or finesse worms and you should do well.

You might check out austinbassfishing.com, there are some guys on there that fish the San Marcos.

I said it's not NOTED for bass. There are bass in some areas. But there is almose zero access to the San Marcos above and below Palmetto. If you put in at Palmetto and drift down, the next PUBLIC access is at Sladen Lane bridge. And it is a rough take out. The first PUBLIC access above Palmetto is at Interstate 10 at Luling. Next time if you are going to question info you are given, Google it.

I wasnt trying to be rude i was just asking a question im sorry if you took offense to that, by no means was i trying to be rude. I just have never fished this area so all help is greatly appreciated. ChuChu1 please accept my appology.

When i googled the info all i coud find was about theses guided tours and floating down river. I will be accessing the river by shore not floating that is why i was asking the questions i did.
Sorry once again

Steigy I belive questioning info you are given is not a bad thing. The San Marcos river has an outstanding population of fat healthy largemouth. The river in San Marcos could not have better habitat for bass. You can walk the entire shore on both sides from the begining of the river by saltgrass all the way down to 35. Good exercise and scenery. Keep playing around with different soft plastics. Small profile is not always neccessary; was catching on a mag lizard tuesday.

You need to look at where those guides are fishing. I'm telling you what the area around Palmetto is like. You MAY be able to wade up or down stream. I have not been out to Palmetto since the last flood. The river changes with each flood. Just be careful and good luck.

That is not the Palmetto area. Yes, the headwaters have a lot of bass and easy access. But he is asking about the Palmetto area.

I thought Steigy was asking about the San Marcos river in general and from shore, my fault.

Yeah Rippen. Quite a few tubers usually. They are generally only in a 4 mile stretch or so from the headwaters east to Rio Vista park. There is a low head dam at Rio Vista where about 60 or 70 percent of the tubers get out. I was there Memorial Day weekend and it was elbow to elbow...But one thing about tubers...they seem to chase all the fish to one area so if you are able to find that area (back water coves, feeder creeks etc.) you can cash in.

Great bass fishing! Fished it for years. My folks used to have a cabin on the river at Martindale(6-7 road miles south of San Marcos). Fished all up and down the river and always caught bass. Used to fish it from a canoe or straddling an inner tube. Wade/fish the faster/shallow areas and use the tube to float/fish the slower/deeper areas. Clear tiny torpedos(small topwater propeller bait) and jighead w/3"-4" curley tail grub. Any color as long as it's chartruse! Best areas are always in the calm water at the base of any fast/rapids area. Often you can catch bass all day long on that small topwater. Good fishing from town all the way to Stapels dam. Look at mapquest or Google maps for good put-in/take-outs. A few miles of river can take a whole afternoon to fish.

There will be tubers and other that show up mid to late morning, but the best bite is early anyways. There are a few areas through there that are not very attractive to tubers, so you can find fish all day. If you plan it right just bring you tube and cooler and join em' if you cant beat em'.

5 mile dam used to be a decent spot till it dried up. It is full again now, but havent been out there to see if there is anything in it.
