I have used power steering fluid,,Didnt seem to damage anything

You can buy it at Acadmey or use transmission fluid

Some of the older ones back in the mid 80's just used
a good 10w40 motor oil,

Should be ATF. Now with all the different ATFs out the question becomes which one. I think I just used plain Dextron in mine. In a properly operating system you should not need to add any. I do not think that I havge even checked mine since I changed out the motor/pump over 190 years ago. Try to siphon out a little bit of the old. It should be pink.
