I now that sandbass and stripers often boil the top of the water while they are feeding on shad. Has anyone ever witnessed a school of crappie do this? I noticed some feeding fish today that didnt seem as aggresive as sandbass and seemed to barely break the surface with their backs. Is it possible that this could have been crappie, or just small sandbass? Thanks

Yes they do, or can. This spring I saw a bunch of crappie jumping out of the water, and on to the bank. Anthony was with me. I wish I would have had a video camera as it was the craziest thing you ever seen.

So they just slurp the prey in rather than attacking aggressively and making a loud splash?

I've noticed a mild boil created by crappie once in a pond.

look for a v shaped coulumn in the water near the surface.

COMING SOON! .. THE STICKLE HOOK " the stay level sickle hook". sits level in the water with all knots.! Provides better hook sets and more natural jigging motion. No more adjusting the knot, gluing , or tying loop knots that cause the hook point to tangle in the loop, or worse knick the line.. The jighook that will make all others obsolete !

never witnessed them boil in a school.. but have seen them pop the top while up spawning- i think thats more of a protection instinct than a feeding instinct.

Brian.. i wish i could have seen that! that sounds like a once in a lifetime deal!

i was at my favorite little water hole two years ago i think. i noticed a disturbance on the water. fish breaking the surface chasing a big ball of shad. after hitting them with top-water, worm, etc., i finally gave up and tied on a spoon and dropped it right in the middle of them....BAM...pull up a decent slab. i then realized it was a school of crappie. now most of the time it was just their backs out of the water as they slowly swam around with the occasional fish actually jumping out of the water....awesome sight to see that boil and end up to be crappie....
