In June I am heading down to Galveston to stay for a week down near San Louis Pass. I would really like to fish the pass and any areas around it, especially to try and find some flounder to gig. We will have a boat but I would like to wade fish as well. If anyone has any advice on the area I would greatly appreciate it. I just don't want to spend most of my time trying to figure out the area when I get there, would rather have and idea of what to look for and what would be a good starting place. Thanks for any guidance.

I grew up in Freeport, go to beach and wade the surf in the morning out to the second sand bar. easiest way to wade and can be most productive. I would not recommend wading the Pass currents are dangerous.

I heard there are sharks near san louis pass. The water moves very fast in some parts of it. There should be some very huge fish over there, i might fish san Louis pass in few months.

I have heard the pass currents can get you quick, thanks for the info. I just figured that the tide movement should really produce some fish.

Have fun over there bud! I think i ran into a bullshark in bay. This fish blasted out of water, i don't think its a redfish because redfish can't move at that speed and make that much noise. I'm thinking its either a bullshark or blacktip shark, big black body and brown color. It was very big and this is great chance to catch my first shark in shallow water.

There is a boat ramp at the park across the bridge on the pther side of the pass. When you us it make sure to stay as far to left as possible, hugging the peirs next to the houses, due to it being extremely shallow. If you look on google maps at the pass you will see a little island in the bay, between that island and the big island, there is a chanel about 8 feet deep and 20 feet wide that runs through there. Its about 10 yards off shore from the big island. Becareful cause its very shallow on both sides of the chanel. Anyways there are fish everywhere running up and down the chanel, just park between the big island and the chanel and cast into it. Situtate yourself between the small island and big island.

I've fished there for 40 years. I invented fishing under the bridge. I limited in 3 hours yesterday morning. You have to have green water and a moving tide to catch fish near the bridge. The boat ramp is open, and the trailer or camping park is now open. It's only 10 minutes from the ramp to the bridge. You can catch flounder, just out of the laguna. Go across the bay to gig.

The most important thing in fishing the bridge is a good anchor. I use a 13 pound Hugger for my 16 foot boat. I've seen people come out and try an hour to get their anchor to hold.

Bill, What would you charge to do a trip for Specs at San Louis? I have all my own gear but I havent fished the area in 4 years and would love to get my line back in the water with a experienced angler.

I generally fish by myself. The problem is I never make my final plans until around 4:00 pm the previous day. I want to make sure the water is right. I check for the good tides a couple weeks ahead of time, but wait for green water and good tides. I only fish about 3 hours each trip.
