When I was a kid 50 years ago in Illinois and Indiana they were called striped bass, but since we moved to Dallas in '58 they have been sandies.

I moved here a few years ago. Where I'm from, we used to call 'em trash fish. smile smile Now I call 'em sand bass.

My wife and I took her Mom and Dad to Toledo Bend last year to a resort. They are elderly folks and love to crappie fish so we hired a crappie guide with a nice pontoon boat so they could be comfortable and fish.

The first fish in the boat was a sand bass - about a 15 inch nice fish. The guide takes the sand bass off the hook and throws it back in!

I asked him why he didn't throw it in the box. His response, "Oh, I didn't know you wanted to keep those trash fish."

Too funny!! banana

We called them white bass in Canada, and, NEVER kept any to eat. They were just a lot of fun to catch.

Now, for 10+ years in Texas, we've called them sand bass and enjoy eatin 'em!

Grew up in Nebraska where they are called white bass. I think the farther you get from Dallas the less likely they are to be called sand bass.

I grew up near Austin, and we always called them white bass. Didn't start calling them sand bass until I moved up here about eight years ago.

I'm from Northwest Missouri. They were called White Bass.

When I first moved to Texas I had no idea what anyone was talking about when they said Sandbass.

Used to catch 'sandies' on Lake Tenkiller in NE Okla.
Looks like we've narrowed it down to N TX and OK and nowhere else?
