I am going to SLP in late june early july and need help fishing. I will be staying in the neighborhood just on the west side of the toll bridge. I went last year in late july and couldn't catch anything. I tried surf fishing, bay fishing and went to the jetties in freeport with no success. I live in the dallas area so I have very little salt water experience!!

Do you have a boat or plan on wading/surf fishing?

To be honest you're better off heading down the blue water highway towards freeport. SLP gets very crowded and I think the fishing is better down in freeport.

Freeport jetty gets even more crowded! If you're fishing SLP in the summer this is what you should do:

1. stop and take a look around. Do you see baitfish/birds breaking the water?

2. Is the water clean and do you have a nice south, south/east wind?

3. Keep track of the tides.

4. Look for some kind of structure. If you can find it, there will be sheepshead, mangrove snapper, and a number of other species near it.

5. If you don't have a cast net...get one! If you see baitfish in the area, catch them and use them. I've caught tons of mullet and scaled sardines in the area. No need to spend any money on shrimp. If you have no choice but to use shrimp, get live shrimp and free-line them.

*use 14-20lb braid as your main line and about 3ft of 20-25lb test florocarbon leader. Put on a 1/8oz split shot about 18"s above the hook and just cast your bait out and let it swim around.

Rent a generator and get yourself some trout lights..

Night fishing is always better at the pass...

You better get there early..

If your gonna do some wading, there is a new development on the galveston side of the toll bridge. Its called pointe west. A lot of people park on the road on the bayside in point west to wade in the bay. You will have to wade out along ways, several hundred yards and find the deeper guts. Free line some live shrimp. You will definitely see other waders out there and get the idea . You can try some topwaters but free lining live shrimp is your best bet. Also there is a bait shop on the brazoria county side of the bridge, can't remember the name for the life of me. Talk to the guys in there, they are really cool and will give you an idea of what's hot and where.

It's difficult to plan ahead when fishing most saltwater. I fish anchored near the bridge on the Galveston side. I see people catching some fish during the incoming tide on that side of the bridge.

Been fishing there since 89' and never run into anything like that. You're more likely to get mauled by a wild boar out there than get shot.

do not wade in the pass. wade in the bay on either side, ppl drown in the pass all the time, its got wicked currents. what igotsnagged said was all good. south/southeast wind no more than 15 mph will give the best water clarity. fish when the tides are changing. you going for reds, trout or whatever bites? fly rod or conventional?
