Hi everyone,
I've been a Bass fisherman for my entire life but have never really fished in Salt Water. I'm going to Port A at the end of the week and would like to wet a line. I'll be fishing from the shore. Does anyone have any suggestions on good areas?
Here's what i have so far: Mustang Island, there are some Jettes that can be good. there are a couple of Fishing Piers, some where, where? Those can be decennt at night. Fishing Live shrimp. what else?
Also, Im guessing that I can rig up a Carolina rig with a circle hook? what is the size weight and size hook that most people would use with this type of fishing. Any other bait, rigs, lures that I shouuld use? I'm going to be rigging up a few pole with live stuff and have one pole that I can use to walk around and cast with, since i'm a bass fishing man and all. any help would be awesome. Thank you !

I checked the weather http://www.srh.noaa.gov/productview.php?pil=CRPCWFCRP and it looks to be windy so that could make the surf a no go. I have heard the sea weed is bad and that will ruin the surf fishing as well. There are three piers on the ship channels that are free and one pier on the beach that charges. I dont fish the jettys much, they are a pain. When you get to the island check with Port A Outfitters and Woodys and get their suggestions. All of the above mentioned locations are in Port Aransas. If you are staying closer to Corpus you might want to fish the jetty at Packery channel. It is set up for fishing and I have heard good things about it. I am sure some Packery veterans will chime in. As far as weight and hook sizes it will depend on where you fish. You will need at least 1 oz. in the surf if it is calm, so in rough water you need a rig that can handle 2 to 4 oz. weights. A Carolina rig will be useful in most any situation. Good luck!

A Carolina rig will be useful in most any situation. Good luck! X2 - Packery is pretty good. Work the channel rocks with live shrimp on an outgoing tide. The trout and reds are there.

Guys I'm new here to the forum and new to saltwater fishing here in the US (Newfoundlander) I have leaved here for 10 years now and am just getting around to starting SW fishing here, I know what took me so long. I've fished home all my life both SW and fresh but it is a lot different here. I will be going to PA on May 20th for along weekend and would like to fish for whatever will gvie me a tight line. Any pointers and places to go would be great. I heard Mirrolures are good to work on top for some good action but what about reds and shack?

tom Mostly live bait...shrimp, mullet, piggy perch, menhaden, whiting, croaker...so forth and so on.

Wilson's Cut is a good place to wade fish. should be plenty of reds and trout. Its about 5 miles out of town heading towards padre island on the right. Throw some gulp plastics and live or dead shrimp. good luck! i will be there in late july!

You can use them with bobbers or on the bottom. Wilson's Cut is only like 5ft deep in the center. I had luck with Gulp mullets and dead shrimp. I just used jig heads with the Gulp mullet(cast and retrieve), and regular size 2 hooks with dead shrimp(sat on bottom).

I found Packery Channel Park. Thanks. that will give me a good place to start. I don't see Wilson's cut on Microsoft Maps or google maps. If you could post a link to that, that would be awesome.
How about types of hooks for live shrimp, and size. Maybe and circle hook? 5/0 ? what would you all recommend?

Use a # 1 or #2 Kahle hook or a #6 or # 8 treble for live shrimp. Hook em through the horn or in the tail to keep em alive. Use a cork with about 24 inches of 20 lb. leader underneath or fish on the bottom w / Carolina rig as stated above.
I'll be there in June, so give a good report for us.

I have found Packery Channel to be great. The secret is to keep your shrimp alive! I will be down there this weekend. Look for a big blonde with a pony tail hauling in fish (Ha, Ha)!

Thanks guys, keep em comin' I was an avid fishermen in Newfoundland and feel a little lost here. But with all your guys advice and info I'm sure I'll get back into the swing of things.
